Yes, she has officially spent 70 years as the U.K. and Commonwealth's queen as of February 6. The entire country will celebrate with a long weekend and events happening throughout the week. After all, when you're the queen, you can have a party whenever you'd like. She even has two different birthday celebrations every year. The Platinum Jubilee isn't your average party, though, and you won't believe which music artist will be headlining during her big celebration.
This all comes after the queen having a rough year so far. She started the year by testing positive for COVID and has been given light workloads (via the BBC). Since then, there have been canceled events and royal family members stepping up to fill roles that the queen normally does. However, there is one event that she certainly will not be missing: the Platinum Jubilee. After all, it's specifically celebrated because of her.
In fact, among the new details about the queen's Platinum Jubilee is the announcement of Elizabeth's epic lineup of performers set to perform during the holiday weekend, and there are a few you might know pretty well.
Ed Sheeran will perform at the Platinum Jubilee
According to Royal.uk, the Platinum Jubilee is "a special extended bank holiday weekend will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone." How could anyone possibly do that without some music? England is rallying up the best of the best in honor of the celebration, and Ed Sheeran is one of them.
Sheeran is officially headlining the Platinum Jubilee on Sunday, June 5, the last night of the event, according to People. That might just be better than Coachella. The "Perfect" singer will join over 400 singers for the big weekend, and, naturally, he's excited to be in attendance.
"I am looking forward to performing at The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant in June," Sheeran said, per People. "I'm proud to be part of the celebration and it's going to be a great opportunity to bring everyone together." It remains unclear at the time of writing which songs Sheeran will perform at the event, which has been deemed "the People's Pageant," per People. In any case, this man will have done his duty.
This isn't the first time Ed Sheeran's met Queen Elizabeth
This is far from the first time that Ed Sheeran has had a run-in with Queen Elizabeth. In fact, he's been to a royal event or two in his day. The first time he met Elizabeth was in 2012 when he performed "The A-Team" at the Diamond Jubilee concert (via PopCrush). That was a decade ago when the Queen celebrated the 60th anniversary of her ascension to the throne. Time really flies when you're busy leading a country.
That's not the only member of the British royal family that the singer has gotten close with, either. As explained to Billboard, Sheeran was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Prince Charles in 2017 as well. Basically, he's a natural treasure.
Seeing as the 31-year-old "Photograph" singer has already performed at a jubilee in the past and has been awarded an MBE, it seems like a no-brainer that he'd be set to perform at the queen's biggest event to date.
