Bullying allegations against Meghan Markle may be the most gossip-worthy controversy surrounding the British royal family right now, but a new issue with an economic slant has an even greater number of UK citizens concerned — and even indignant. It has to do with how much money the royals took from taxpayers in 2020-2021.
According to a report released in June 2022, the royal family raked in £86.3 million (approximately $105 million) in funds from UK taxpayers. Each taxpayer paid roughly £1.29 to; these expenses went towards the Sovereign Grant, which brought in £51.8 million in funding, as well as £34.5 million for fixing up Buckingham Palace.
Channel 5 News also found that the cost has only increased in 2022; the royal family has now taken £102 million (approximately $124.18 million) in tax funds. "The money spent on royals can be put back into the system. (For example, new hospitals and staff.)," one Twitter user wrote. "£15 million more in the year Prince Andrew was given £12 million by Liz? Well I never," another tweeted.
