On May 12, 2022, Ashley Judd revealed that her mother, Naomi Judd, who died on April 30, 2022, had taken her own life. Ashley discussed the difficult process of grieving this immense loss while also healing from the trauma of having been the person to discover her mother.
Ashley stated that she and her sister did not want to discuss the details of what happened, but thought it was preferable for Naomi's family to speak publicly rather than the news coming from another source. Ashley then stated through sobs, "My mother used a firearm."
Ashley said she hopes that by revealing the truth about what happened, people who are suffering from mental illness may get help and realize they are not alone. Naomi had long struggled with depression, she said, adding, "It's very important to be clear and to make the distinction between our loved one and the disease. It's very real, and it lies, it's savage."
