Although Will Smith has apologized to Chris Rock for hitting him on live television and is dealing with the fallout from his outburst, the damage is considerably more extensive than those few seconds. Rose Rock, Rock's mother, is currently sending this message, and she has a lot to say.
Rose was asked how her son is coping now, and she replied, "He is doing well. As he said, he's still processing it, because that's not something you expect." She informed him he was "standing on the shoulders of Sidney Poitier," the acclaimed actor who, in the face of adversity, exhibited dignity.
Rose went on to say that “When Will slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. But he really slapped me [...] Because when you hurt my child, you hurt me." Rose felt powerless as she watched from her home, unable to reach out to her son immediately, adding, "No matter how old they are, they're still your babies."
When asked what she would say to Will Smith if she could, Rose responded she has “no idea what [she] would say, other than, 'What in the world were you thinking?'" Rose also expressed her dissatisfaction with Smith's Oscar ban, saying, "What does that mean? [He doesn't] even go every year."
