As per the White House Historical Association, Rachel Lambert Mellon originally redesigned the White House Rose Garden in 1961 during the Kennedy administration.
When Melania Trump decided to renovate the Rose Garden in 2020 during the Trump administration, it was decried as an insult to former First Lady Jackie Kennedy’s legacy.
After the renovations, Presidential historian Michael Beschloss tweeted a picture of the reimagined Rose Garden with the caption, "Decades of American history made to disappear."
To defend her actions, the official Office of Melania Trump account tweeted "[Beschloss] has proven his ignorance by showing a picture of the Rose Garden in its infancy."
While Melania's harsh words for those criticizing her Rose Garden renovation were met with strong backlash, some individuals came to support the former First Lady.
The Washington Post reported a myriad of woes plaguing the decades-old garden, which made Trump's renovations seem almost necessary for the garden’s survival.
