WNBA star Brittney Griner — who also goes by the moniker BG — has been detained in Russia since February for reportedly carrying cannabis oil in her luggage. Now, the Biden administration is allegedly negotiating a trade where Griner will be released from Russia in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who has been incarcerated for over a decade.
When Donald Trump was asked for his opinion on BG’s situation on the "Clay Travis & Buck Sexton" radio show, he said, "He's [Viktor Bout] absolutely one of the worst in the world, and he's going to be given his freedom because a potentially spoiled person goes into Russia loaded up with drugs." Trump’s comment unsurprisingly received a lot of backlash from Twitter users.
"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough also disparaged Trump’s statement and alleged that Trump's commentary perpetuated stereotypes against people of color. "We have Donald Trump talking about her, quote, 'loaded up with drugs,'" Scarborough explained. "There's been no testimony, no evidence, no suggestion that she was, quote, 'loaded up with drugs.'"
