In Season 10 of "When Calls the Heart," there is an iconic scene where Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) and Lee Coulter (Kavan Smith) welcome a newborn baby girl into their lives.
In a Facebook Live session with interviewer Deidre Behar, Hutton revealed that many aspects of the labor scenes were not entirely scripted and were improvised on the spot.
For instance, in the scene where Rosemary suddenly goes into labor in town and others rally around her, the actors spontaneously go off script.
"That moment where everybody starts breathing together to try and support Rosemary? That was all improvised." Hutton recalled, adding, "That episode was a dream to film."
As the actors moved on to the delivery scene, Hutton chose to keep the portrayal grounded. Smith, who was initially considering a comedic approach, chose to match her tone.
This resulted in a performance that exuded authenticity and was well-received. Smith recounted, "And when we got to the very end of the day, the crew clapped."
