Queen Elizabeth II is Britain's longest-reigning monarch, but in recent years, health issues have kept her out of the public eye. Prince Charles, who is next in line for the throne, has been stepping up to take on some of the queen's duties, and his transition into the role of King will come with plenty of other changes, possibly including his name.
British monarchs have the option to choose a regnal name, or ruling name, that is different from their birth name and will serve as their identity for as long as they sit on the throne. Most citizens expect Prince Charles to simply become King Charles III, but it's possible he may choose a different name in order to avoid bad luck.
Both King Charles I and King Charles II were part of the English Civil Wars, meaning Prince Charles may choose a new regnal name to escape negative connotations. The prince actually has four first names — Charles, Philip, Arthur, and George — so he just might become King Philip or King Arthur, instead of King Charles.
