When Heather Matarazzo was seven years old, she caught the eye of a talent scout when she scolded her castmates for not taking the production seriously. At 11, Matarazzo made her film debut in "Welcome to the Dollhouse," for which she later won the Independent Spirit Award for best debut performance.
9/11
The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, were personal for Matarazzo, because in a different scenario, she might have lost her life that day. She explained, "I had a meeting at World Trade Center 1, 15th floor at 9 AM. My alarm didn't go off. I woke up at 8:50 AM."
Politics
Matarazzo has never been shy about making her opinions known, and politics is no exception, as she’s been vocal in her support for certain candidates and has also made her criticism of their opponents known. She weighed in on the 2018 midterm elections, criticizing the white woman majority that voted Republican.
Not the Pretty Girl
Matarazzo has faced criticism for her looks, even losing roles because people didn't think she was pretty enough to play the lead. "I'm not that pretty girl next door," she told AfterEllen, adding that she's grateful for the opportunity to play "interesting" characters.
Interesting Scripts
Matarazzo refuses to compromise for roles, and will only accept a part if she believes in the script because it's important that the film resonates with her. She elaborated, "When I read a story, when I read a script, is it something that I feel challenged by, is it something I'm horrified by, is it something I'm inspired by, is it something that I'm judging?"
