On May 24, 2022, tragedy struck Uvalde, Texas when a school shooter killed two teachers and 18 elementary school students. People around the world have shown their condolences to the family and friends involved, and some have shown up to the victims' memorial to pay respects in-person, including Meghan Markle.
Markle traveled to the memorial outside the Uvalde County Courthouse and left flowers in front of the cross of 10-year-old victim Uziyah Garcia. A spokesperson said, "Meghan took the trip in a personal capacity as a mother, to offer her condolences and support in person to a community experiencing unimaginable grief."
While in Uvalde, Markle also dropped by the Herby Ham Activity Center to give food and drinks to the volunteers. One volunteer told Buzzfeed, "She was just really sweet [...] It's funny, we didn't even know it was her until after she left and now we're so sad. I mean, to be honest, we thought she was our neighbor."
