Prince William has turned 40, and has received Instagram birthday wishes from the royal family's official account, the Commonwealth War Graves account, and many, many fans. The prince has a little something to say back to the public, and we have more info on what this milestone means for him.
William responded to his well-wishers on Twitter, writing, "Thank you for all the happy birthday messages today! W". Prince William turning 40 marks changes in an aging monarchy; by the time Queen Elizabeth II was 40 years old, she had already been queen for 15 years, and William is second in line to the throne.
It's possible that William may not ascend to the kingship until his later years, since his father Prince Charles is first in line, but the Duke of Cambridge is taking on more royal duties in preparation for both his and his father's ascension. William will officially become "heir apparent" once Prince Charles becomes King.
