2022 has been a rollercoaster ride for Queen Elizabeth. She got to enjoy her Platinum Jubilee celebration, which marked 70 years of her service as monarch, but she's also dealt with varius health issues, and encountered an even rougher patch when she stripped her disgraced son, Prince Andrew, of all his royal titles.
Despite her health struggles, the queen made a trip to Scotland to visit First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on June 29, 2022. Her visit piques interest, since the Scottish Parliament is currently working on an independence referendum, which would allow the national to be an independent country apart from the United Kingdom.
In response to rumors that the queen may influence Scotland's independence, Buckingham Palace stated, “Any suggestion that the queen would wish to influence the outcome of the current referendum campaign is categorically wrong.” When this topic first came up in 2014, First Minister Alex Salmond told Elizabeth that she would always be the “Queen of Scots.”
If Scotland does become independent, royal expert Robert Hardman believes the queen “would ready herself for either result. "Of course, she would be very sad if the Union came to an end," Harman explains, "but if it is the democratic will, I think she will say to herself, If this is what people have voted for, it is my duty to make it work.'"
