Queen Elizabeth's love of bright colors began in the early 1980s, when Prince Charles married Diana Spencer and the queen wore a monochromatic light blue dress. The monarch hasn't looked back since, becoming very well-known for her head-to-toe pastel and brightly-colored outfits. What made the British monarch settle on this style?
Her Majesty is one of the most recognizable people in the world, but standing at 5’ 3”, she's relatively short and it can be hard to spot her in a crowd. By wearing bright colors, the queen can stand out, says her daughter-in-law, the Countess of Sussex: "She needs to stand out for people to be able to say 'I saw the Queen.'"
The queen also enjoys matching her outfit to an area she's visiting, taking inspiration from a nation's flag or a state flower. Personal dresser Angela Kelly explained how she keeps the queen's wardrobe fresh: "After two or three outings, we will either look for ways to modify [a piece] or it will become something that is worn on private holidays.”
