Getting Ready
First, make sure your skin is clean and free of any cosmetics or lotions. If you just washed your face, wait about 15-30 minutes until any redness from scrubbing fades. Make sure you use natural daylight to examine your skin tone, as artificial lighting can change the appearance of your skin's undertones.
Determining Tone
Hold a white paper against your skin or on the crease behind your ear and compare how your skin looks in contrast to the paper. If your skin looks yellow, green, or light brown, then you have a warm skin tone; colors pink, rosy, or blue, mean you have a cool skin tone; tones gray or ashen, mean you are a neutral skin tone.
Warm Skin Tones
If you've got warm skin tones, the best colors for you are rich reflections of nature like red, peach, coral, and orange, or warmer tones like olive, moss, and orchid. You should avoid icy blues, jewel tones like sapphire, and neutrals like taupe, cappuccino, and cream.
Cool Skin Tones
If you have a cooler skin tone, your best colors are bright blues, emeralds, and deep purples, along with frosty shades of lavender. You will also look great in bright rosy red, or super-pale yellows, cool gray, bright white, and navy on the neutral end. However, you should avoid orange, tomato red, and strong yellows.
Neutral Skin Tones
With a neutral skin tone, your ideal colors are dusty pink, jade green, cornsilk yellow, lagoon blue, off-whites, coffee, mid-range grays, and black. However, you should never be afraid to wear a bright, true red. To find out which colors universally match all skin tones, click the 'Read Full Story' link below.
