Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96 on September 8, leaving behind a 70-year reign and a huge legacy. The queen's passing was somewhat sudden, despite knowledge of her declining health over the years, and the public is now reflecting on the final photos of Elizabeth's life, which none of us knew would be her last.
Just 48 hours before the queen passed away, she hosted the new Prime Minister of Britain, Liz Truss, at Balmoral Castle home in Scotland. The pair was photographed shaking hands and chatting it up, and while the queen appeared to be frail, she stood true to who she was — a charismatic and dedicated leader.
Queen Elizabeth's meeting with Truss was her first public appearance since July. Before she took the throne, Elizabeth stated, "I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service." Many believe she lived up to that promise, even hosting the newest prime minister just 48 hours before she passed.
The prime minister later commented on the queen's passing in a heartfelt statement. "Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built," Truss wrote in part. "Our country has grown and flourished under her reign. It is a day of great loss, but Queen Elizabeth II leaves a great legacy."
