When Princess Anne married Capt. Mark Phillips in 1973, she wore Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara which her mother, Queen Elizabeth II, wore at her 1947 wedding to Prince Phillip.
Also inspired by past royalty was Anne’s dress, which reportedly paid homage to the Elizabethan Era, named for Queen Elizabeth’s rule between 1558 and 1603.
Maureen Baker, the chief designer of Susan Small, created Anne's wedding dress. The Princess asked Baker for an Elizabethan era-influenced dress reimagined for the '70s.
Baker obliged Anne's request and created a minimalistic wedding dress inspired by history, with a high collar and Tudor-style embroidery. The sleeves were essential to this look.
Steven Stone Jewellers says, "Full-length trumpet sleeves and huge cuffs reminiscent of Elizabethan ruffs became one of the most memorable parts of this royal wedding dress."
Anne's dress also had a seven-foot train and a floral design on the back. Pearls and jewels embellished the silk bodice and the silk chiffon undersleeves.
