Prince Harry has admitted that part of the reason he left England was due to fear that his wife Meghan Markle's fate would be similar to that of his mother, Princess Diana. Both women were heavily scrutinized by the British media, impacting their mental wellbeing, and Harry still wishes he did more for his mother before her car-crash death, rumored to be caused by paparazzi.
On the last day of Princess Diana’s life, Prince Harry — then only 12 years old — ended a phone call from his mom hastily so he could continue playing. Harry revealed, "I will regret for the rest of my life how short the phone call was, and if I'd known that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother," he would have said many things to her.
Princess Diana remains a huge inspiration for Harry, and her influence likely led him to speak out about his and Meghan's struggles; royal expert Omid Scobie says Diana stood for "telling your truth and having a voice [...] I think to see her son find his voice and be unafraid to use it when really everything is at stake, I imagine she would be incredibly proud."
