Preparations for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral have already begun; upon arriving at Westminster Abbey on September 14, the queen will lie in state until the ceremony on Monday, September 19. As royalty, Elizabeth certainly had no shortage of gorgeous, expensive, and often one-of-a-kind jewelry, but she will likely be buried with only two pieces.
Lisa Levinson, head of communications at the Natural Diamond Council, told Metro UK, "Her Majesty is an incredibly humble woman at heart who is unlikely to be dressed in anything but her simple Welsh gold wedding band to rest and a pair of pearl earrings." Levinson believes that the queen's engagement ring will be left to her daughter Princess Anne.
As noted by the Daily Mail, the queen's jewelry collection of about 300 pieces includes 34 pairs of earrings, 15 rings, and 98 brooches. The monarch often used jewelry to mark special occasions or symbolize her opinion on a matter; for example, she wore a Grima Ruby Brooch from her late husband, Prince Philip, for her platinum wedding anniversary in 2017.
Besides Princess Anne, another royal woman with a connection to the queen's jewelry is Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. Amid the queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Middleton was seen wearing a pair of Elizabeth's pearl drop earrings, so we may see the Duchess continue to pay tribute to her late stepmother using jewelry.
