Johnny Depp first met Winona Ryder first met at the premiere of “Great Balls of Fire,” which Ryder starred in. Depp said it was love at first sight, telling Rolling Stone, “It was a classic glance, like the zoom lenses in ‘West Side Story,’ and everything else gets foggy.”
They starred in “Edward Scissorhands” together, and they got so close Depp even got a tattoo of “Winona Forever,” which left Ryder shocked and in disbelief. They got engaged after five months of dating, but they never found it in themselves to marry, and their breakup was so intense that Ryder dealt with depression afterwards, feeling, in her own words, “completely lost.”
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Depp claimed the media played a part in his breakup, saying, “It was my mistake to be as open as we were, but I thought if we were honest it would destroy that curiosity monster. Instead it fed it, gave people license to feel they were part of it."
