John Hughes was the director of several genre-defining teen films, including "Pretty in Pink," "The Breakfast Club," and the most romantic "Sixteen Candles." However, one "Sixteen Candles" star has left Hollywood to pursue a very different career.
Michael Schoeffling portrayed Jake Ryan, the hottest guy in school and the love interest of protagonist Sam (Molly Ringwald). Schoeffling appeared in various films after, including "Mermaids," with Cher and Christina Ricci, but he appears to have retired from acting in 1991.
Schoeffling now lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two children, Zane and Scarlett, where he has a woodworking shop. Schoeffling reportedly struggled to make ends meet following his brief stint in the spotlight and turned to carpentry to support his growing family.
Schoeffling has been approached for "Where are they now?" parts countless times over the years, but it appears he has no interest in returning to the spotlight. In 2010, a blogger shared ‌she met him while shopping at his furniture store, and he reportedly reacted favorably to being recognized.
