meeting joanna
Chip met Joanna at her father’s automotive shop, where they hit it off immediately, but he almost blew it when he was 90 minutes late to their first date with nothing planned. Clearly, he made a better impression on subsequent dates, because they were married two years later.
FLAT broke flippers
Although it is hard to imagine now, when Chip and Joanna were first married and starting their business empire, they were flat broke. Joanna said, "I remember when we first got married, the only money we had was what was in Chip's pocket," and while "he always had a wad of cash, we were broke.”
becoming a dad
Less than a year after getting married, Chip Gaines became a father for the first time when his oldest son, Drake, was born. Three more children quickly followed, and in 2018, the fifth (and final?) child, Crew, was born.
fixer upper
Chip has been flipping houses since college, but the fame from “Fixer Upper” was not something he and Joanna anticipated. They were taken aback by the show’s success, but they recognized the opportunity and took advantage by writing books, designing product lines for Target, and creating new real estate ventures in Waco.
network executive
In July 2021, Chip and Joanna Gaines successfully launched the Magnolia Network, replete with original programming, and it immediately gained a huge audience. Chip serves as a program executive for the network that features shows like "Fixer Upper: Welcome Home," "Restoration Road with Clint Harp," and "Super Dad."
