The Supreme Court's Decision To Overturn Roe V Wade Explained

On the morning of June 24, 2022, both pro-choice and pro-life abortion activists congregated outside of the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. for news about the landmark decision regarding the 1973 ruling of Roe v. Wade, which protects women's access to abortion under the Constitution. Anticipation was high following the SCOTUS draft leak in May.
The conservative court overturned Roe v. Wade in a split 5-4 decision — with a 6-3 split supporting the specific Mississippi ban in question — determining there is no federal constitutional right to have an abortion. This dramatic reversal comes after having that right written into law for nearly half a century.
The decision now gives states the opportunity to ban abortions, and ABC News reported we can anticipate at least 26 states to either severely restrict or ban abortions. The ruling also opens up a floodgate of other issues, such as abortion travel costs in banned states, an inevitable influx to clinics in legal states, and the continued fight for body autonomy.
