The royal family is discouraged from engaging in politics, with Queen Elizabeth not even allowed to vote because "the queen has to remain strictly neutral." Prince William, the future King of England, has kept generally silent on political issues, but he recently sent a condolence letter to the girlfriend of a fallen officer.
Prince William was inspired to write a letter to Sandra Garza, the grieving partner of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, after watching a documentary about the January 6 insurrection in the United States Capitol. "Please forgive me if I am intruding but I wanted to write and let you know how sorry I am about the death of your partner, Brian." Prince William wrote to Garza.
In his letter to Garza, Prince William stated, "I wanted to acknowledge the patriotism and selflessness of Brian," and praised how Sicknick performed his duties "valiantly," and how, as a result of his heroics, "the situation did not escalate further and democracy was upheld." The note moved Garza, who described William as "a beautiful, wonderful person."
