Kate Linder made her debut appearance on "The Young and the Restless" in 1982 as Esther Valentine, the maid of the Chancellor family, and Linder not only excelled in the part for 40 years, but she also created an everlasting bond with Kay Chancellor's Jeanne Cooper. In an interview, Linder explains the "Y&R" scene that never fails to bring tears to her eyes.
On the soap in 1991, Kay and her husband, Rex Sterling, put on a masquerade ball for charity, and it was Kay's introduction of Esther on stage that still makes her emotional. Linder explained, "She said something like, 'Well, now ladies and gentlemen, I give you..' She started to say, 'I give you, my maid.' But instead, she went, 'I give you my...' Just a little beat. 'My friend.'"
It's beautiful times like this one, when Kay showed love to Esther, that make Linder miss her close friend Cooper, who passed away in 2013. Linder revealed how Cooper, like Esther on the show, became her on-set confidante, stating, "I can hear her today, I hear her in my head saying, 'Really! 40 years...'"
