Mascara can look great at first, but slowly leak down your face during the day. Makeup artist Nikki Wolff told Real Simple why mascara smudges: "The oil in our skin, or creamy products applied around the eyes, can make the pigment of the mascara transfer onto skin, even after the mascara is dry." Here are a few tricks to keep your mascara in place.
Makeup artist Janice Daoud suggests using a powder-laced blotting sheet to gently press over your eyelids and under-eyes and completely mattify your lids. The Mascara Wand recommends using a good matte finishing powder as well, to ensure oil doesn’t sneak back during the day. Once your lids are oil-free, you're ready to apply your mascara.
Layer your mascara by beginning with a regular non-waterproof mascara, then "apply your regular mascara first and then a coat of waterproof mascara on top," makeup artist Jenny Patinkin tells mindbodygreen. You can also opt to use a clear base coat instead of a colored mascara as the primer; either way, the outer waterproof coat will set well over top.
