Beyond her recent separation from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau has dealt with tragic hardships like an eating disorder and public backlash.
A former presenter for eTalk, a Canadian entertainment show, Sophie has admitted to suffering from an eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, as a teenager.
Despite praise for her mental health initiatives, Sophie was criticized in 2016 when she said she needed more staff to help with her responsibilities as the prime minister’s wife.
Moreover, Sophie and her husband were condemned in 2020 when it was revealed that WE charity paid $24,000 for Sophie to make public appearances, per the National Post.
In early August 2023, Sophie and Justin dropped the shocking news on Instagram that they were separating. According to The Guardian, they have a legal separation agreement.
Now that the Trudeaus have called it quits, Sophie will have to rebuild herself as a private citizen. She won’t represent the Canadian government and will lose out on privileges.
Sophie's book, "Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other," drops in April 2024. It’s unclear whether she’ll do any last-minute revisions to reflect recent events.
