In 1963, an 8-year-old Maria Shriver lost her maternal uncle and current U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated during a re-election campaign.
In 1968, another uncle on Shriver's mother's side of the family, Robert F. Kennedy, or Bobby, was killed during a presidential campaign. Shriver was 12 at the time.
Shriver, who joined CBS as a correspondent in 1983, was fired along with her CBS News Morning Show co-anchor in 1986 when the show was canceled due to low ratings.
In 1999, Shriver's cousin, John F. Kennedy Jr., died in a plane crash that also killed his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and Carolyn's sister, Lauren Bessette.
Maria's father, Sargent Shriver, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2003. As the disease progressed, Maria routinely had to explain to her father who she was.
