Common Childhood
Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias have certain childhood similarities, as they both immigrated to the United States at a young age. They both found their skills at an early age, with Kournikova receiving her first tennis racket at the age of five and Iglesias writing songs at a young age.
First Meeting
The pair met in December 2001 on the set of Iglesias’ music video for “Escape,” where they lock lips on camera. Iglesias told MTV's “Making the Video” before shooting the music video, “I'm a big fan. [...] She's beautiful, talented, great tennis player, you know, and I'm sure she's going to be great in the video.”
Early Days
It's possible that the pair began dating around the time they filmed the music video, but the details of their relationship after that are a little unclear because they didn't immediately go public with it. They made their first public appearance together at the MTV Music Video Awards in August 2002, and they have been together ever since.
Interesting Rumor
An interesting rumor surfaced in 2002 when it was said that hotel management once asked the couple to quiet down after a round of exuberant lovemaking. Iglesias addressed the rumor with Jane magazine, saying, “I wish I was that kind of lover [...] It makes me look like a stud.”
Rocky First Years
Tabloids extensively covered the couple's breakup and subsequent reunion in the early years of their relationship. Women's Wear Daily said that Iglesias and Kournikova had broken up in December 2003, but the following month the outlet claimed they had mended and that Iglesias had given Kournikova a $75,000 “friendship ring.”
