Matthew Grey Gubler is best known for portraying fan favorite Dr. Spencer Reid on “Criminal Minds.” Many cast members have come and gone, but Gubler has 323 episodes of the show under his belt, having stayed on from the series debut in 2005 to its end in 2020 — this is why he never got tired of it.
Fans are still obsessed with the quirky and charming Dr. Reid, who can be strange and aloof, yet also very vulnerable, a trait not often seen in young male characters. Gubler has admitted to feeling “very protective” over his beloved and unique character, which is one reason why he never abandoned “Criminal Minds.”
Fans also love Gubler off-screen, as he is a friendly and enthusiastic actor who says, “I love entertaining people, and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.” Not only is Gubler invested in this fanbase, he was also more invested in “Criminal Minds” than the average cast member, having directed 12 episodes — no wonder he stuck with the show to the end.
Gubler said that filming the last episodes of “Criminal Minds” “wasn’t sad” and “was kind of beautiful,” so despite his utter dedication to the show, he felt that he was ready to move on. A 10-episode revival series of “Criminal Minds” was recently greenlit, but Gubler won't be returning, as he feels he's done with Spencer Reid's story.
