Everything We Know About Margot Robbie And Tom Ackerley's Relationship

Australian actress Margot Robbie stole the hearts of many with her remarkable performances as Harley Quinn, Tonya Harding, and Sharon Tate, and surely will again as Barbie in the upcoming Barbie movie. So, it was no surprise that she caught the eye of an on-set producer named Tom Ackerley who worked with her on several films and has likely gotten to experience Robbie's acting magic, beauty, and personality firsthand.

Robbie and British film producer Tom Ackerley have kept their relationship under tight wraps, maintaining a very private bond while giving the public only mere glimpses into their relationship through social media or appearances together at red-carpet events and award shows.

But, it shouldn't go without saying Robbie and Ackerley have probably one of the most relatable yet real relationships in Hollywood when they do decide to give the public an inside glimpse. Just like most relationships happen, Robbie and Ackerley first met while at work and although their romance wasn't immediate, it grew over time and especially hit Robbie by surprise when she came to the realization that she had feelings for Ackerley. "And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long." Robbie told Vogue. After Robbie's realization, the rest became history and the two married in 2016. Read on to find out everything we know about the couple's intimate relationship.

The two met on set of the movie Suite Française in 2013

Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley first met on set of the movie "Suite Française" in 2013 which was a love story drama based on an unfinished novel written by Irène Némirovsky that took place during World War II. Robbie played a small role in the film while Ackerley worked as an assistant director. During production, the cast apparently grew quite tight and remained good friends even after production ended. "We became really close," Robbie told The Guardian. "You spend so much time with your crew – I mean, if you want to."

By January 2014, Robbie met up with her old London cast members while in town for the premiere of "The Wolf of Wall Street" and had such a good time that she threw out the idea that everyone, including Ackerley, should all move in together. "We were like, 'Wouldn't it be funny if we all lived together?'," she told The Guardian in 2018. "Someone said, 'But you don't live in London,' and I said, 'I don't live anywhere. I'll move.' Three days later we signed a lease in Clapham. I didn't even see the place."

So the crew bit the bullet, and Robbie, Ackerley, and five other housemates moved into a three-bedroom home in London. At the time, Robbie and Ackerley were strictly just friends but eventually became romantically involved after living together, which they initially kept a secret from their housemates.

The two were first pictured together at a NY Rangers game in 2015

Fans got the sweetest glimpse into Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley's dating life during the early stages of their relationship in 2015 when they attended a New York Rangers hockey game together in New York City. When they were not fully invested in the game, cheering, they were fully invested in each other, sharing plenty of laughs, kisses, and even a few intimate whispers. Fans could almost literally feel their chemistry just based on the few photos taken of the couple from the game. Robbie represented the Rangers with an oversized New York Rangers jersey, which worked in her favor that night, considering the Rangers won against the Arizona Coyotes. According to Yahoo!, Robbie is apparently a huge hockey fan and even an amateur hockey player.

Apart from publicly debuting their adorable relationship to the world, Robbie was originally in town for some movie promotion and made an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" while she was there too, according to Pop Sugar.

When it came to dating Tom, Margot Robbie didn't see it coming

It probably comes as no surprise that Robbie has always been focused on her acting career, which quickly took off after her role in "The Wolf of Wall Street." So, when her career really started taking off, a romantic relationship was the last thing on her mind. "I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit," she told Vogue in 2016.

But, like the familiar love story of many, love found Robbie when she wasn't looking for it — and her husband was right under her nose all along. Tom Ackerley first started working as a film producer with Robbie in 2014 for the movie "Suite Francaise." After some time, Robbie had a sudden awakening about Ackerley. "And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, 'Oh, he would never love me back. Don't make it weird, Margot. Don't be stupid and tell him that you like him,'" she told Vogue.

"And then it happened," she said, "and I was like, 'Of course we're together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.'"

They have their own production company called LuckyChap

In 2014 Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley decided to start their own production company called LuckyChap Entertainment to produce their own films and television shows. The production company is made up of Robbie and Ackerley's close friends and fellow co-workers from "Suite Francaise," who they also lived with in London. "We were all like, 'I want to make my own stuff,'" Robbie told The Hollywood Reporter, with Ackerley adding, "It was a bit of, 'If they're doing it, why can't we?'"

The company has produced numerous box office hits, with its focus on creating empowering female characters. Through LuckyChap, the couple also developed several films starring Robbie in some of her most iconic roles, including "I, Tonya," "Birds of Prey," and the upcoming live-action "Barbie" movie alongside Ryan Gosling. Other films and shows produced by LuckyChap include the show "Dollface" starring Kat Dennings and the movie "Promising Young Woman," starring Carey Mulligan.

They've kept their relationship very private

Robbie and Ackerley have probably one of the most private romantic relationships in the celebrity world. The only glimpses into their relationship that the public has seen have been through adorable photos shared on Ackerley's Instagram (and previously on Robbie's since-deleted Instagram) or on the red carpet at black-tie events. Robbie "values her privacy and prefers to stay out of the spotlight," a source told E! News. Robbie and her husband "are inseparable and the best of friends."

"They are a lovely couple and very much newlyweds," the source said to E! News. When it comes to what they like doing for fun, however, "They have a lot in common and love to travel and be adventurous. They're either surfing or snowboarding or hiking together. It's what they love the most, to be out in nature and be active." Interestingly enough, when the couple isn't involved in adventures, they just as much prefer a night in as homebodies, making them very relatable.

They had a secret engagement and wedding

As private as Robbie and Ackerley's relationship has been, it is no surprise that their engagement and wedding were kept under wraps. In 2016, many speculated that the couple tied the knot, but it was not official until Robbie posted an adorable photo of her confirming the news (in her now-deleted Instagram) by holding up her ring finger with a gorgeous teardrop engagement ring and kissing her now husband, Ackerley.

The couple had a small, intimate wedding with only 50 guests at a private property in Coorabell, Byron Bay on Dec 18, 2016. Robbie stunned in a beautiful yet simple off-the-shoulder bohemian wedding gown and wore her hair in a curled style with loose pieces in the front. The beautiful bride was given away by her mother, physiotherapist Sarie Kessler. Supposedly, guests had no idea of the wedding location until the actual wedding day and were transported there by bus from a separate location. Guests also handed over their phones and devices to security so no photos could be taken of the private event.

On their honeymoon, the newlyweds had a hilarious run-in with Ellen DeGeneres

In an appearance on "The Ellen Show," Ellen DeGeneres asked Robbie to share the story of how they — Robbie and Ackerley — met DeGeneres. "I'm scared because my husband's gonna kill me for telling this story, but it's my favorite story ever," Robbie starts.

During their Tahiti honeymoon, Robbie and Ackeley decided to attend a gym class where Ackerley decided to wear an old pair of gym shorts which Robbie described as "tiny" and "really short" with "nothing underneath." Robbie asked her husband if he was sure he wanted to wear them and he reassured her, "We won't run into anyone," to which Robbie agreed. Of course, as soon as they walk into the gym, they see no other than DeGeneres next to her wife, Portia de Rossi. As everyone begins their introductions, DeGeneres asks, "Have you guys met Obama?" — who was standing right next to them.

Robbie explained that the gym instructor kept correcting Ackerley since he was trying to be mindful of his movements to avoid exposing himself. DeGeneres chimed in that everyone was trying hard to look away so as to not see anything. In their final stretch, Robbie explained that it was basically a spread-eagle pose that forced Ackerley to cover himself with a towel. Robbie recalls DeGeneres telling Ackerley, "Man, you wore the wrong shorts today." To top it off, at the end of the show, DeGeneres gifted Robbie with a pair of shorts to give to Ackerley.

Tom is her biggest supporter when she takes on a new role

As if there weren't already enough reasons to love Robbie, she gets just as nervous when beginning a new job as anyone else does. In an interview with Mirror, she explained that her husband, Ackerley, is her biggest supporter and hype-man when she feels nervous and doubtful about her acting abilities, even if she's reprising a character. "Even though Harley is a character I have played before, I still got scared before shooting because I'm always nervous to start any job," she told Mirror. "I have this complete crisis of faith and think, 'Oh my gosh, I'm not even good at acting and I can't do this'.

But, her husband is always there to give her the reassurance she needs to not only do her job but to do it successfully. "Every time I do a movie, I turn to my husband and I'm like, 'I don't think I can do this'. He says something like, 'You do this every time. You'll be fine,'" she told Mirror. As simple as it may sound, sometimes everyone, including Robbie, just needs a little pep talk to settle nerves before a big task.
