The Best Dressed At The 2019 MTV Movie And TV Awards

The 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards, which is arguably one of the most overlooked shows of award season, made for another night of dazzling, red carpet fashion. But that doesn't mean that celebs showed up looking any less coiffed than they do at other big events like the Academy Awards or the Grammys, so it's a good thing the cameras were flashing.

Unlike some of the haughtier award nights, the MTV Movie and TV Awards have a bit of a playful vibe, and that was reflected in the styles that the nominees and presenters showed off as they showed up. That explains the unconventional patterns on actress Kiernan Shipka's dress, as well as the shining silver dragon on The Handmaid's Tale star Elisabeth Moss' gown.

Overall, it was a night of fashion debuts and bold statements, with some seriously stand-out styles among them. So without further ado, here's a list of the best-dressed celebrities at the 2019 MTV Movie and TV Awards.

Jada Pinkett Smith

It was a big night for Red Table Talk host Jada Pinkett Smith, who took home the Trailblazer Award — a huge honor. She accepted the award while her son Jayden pumped up the crowd, and she opened up about her initial sense of unworthiness. "Often we applaud the trails people blaze in the external world that we can see," she shared in her speech. "But very rarely do we applaud the trails that are blazed in the hidden rooms of the mind that are full of uncertainty, false beliefs, and pain." Smith went on to describe the courage she mustered to overcome those anxieties, and she honored everyone in the room for their contributions. Talk about a class act!

Of course, Smith looked absolutely flawless at the event, slaying in a shimmering silver suit with black accents, accompanied by anything-but-basic black pumps. Of course, she sported her signature short haircut, and she rocked a face of minimal makeup. Smith topped it all off with understated sparkly hoop earrings, completing her slick summer look.

Lizzo

Wherever Lizzo goes, the cameras follow — it's just the law of the universe, fam. The "Juice" singer has enjoyed a steady and well-deserved rise in celebrity, due in no small part to her tremendously successful album Cuz I Love You. The major label debut has had fans and critics alike buzzing with its catchy melodies and self-celebratory lyrics. It's worth a listen, for sure!

As usual, Lizzo made sure that everyone who saw her on the red carpet would remember her, as she stepped out in a bright green, feather-accented dress, custom-made by Christopher Johnson Rogers. "The Grinch dipped in Teen Nick Slime, but make it fashion," the designer shared on Instagram, giving you an idea of how wonderful and strange Lizzo's mind is. With matching neon-green eye-shadow and flowing ebony locks, Lizzo was absolutely electric. She rounded out the look with blinged-out white sneakers and tiny star-shaped earrings.

As usual, Lizzo wasn't shy about how much she was feeling herself. "Baddest b***h in Whoville," she shared in an Instagram post. Blame it on the juice!

Storm Reid

The world was introduced to the talent that is Storm Reid in a big way when she landed the role of Meg in director Ava DuVernay's film A Wrinkle in Time. Though she had been in films before, that movie put her front and center in a seriously major motion picture. Now she's getting roles left and right, and we are 100 percent here for that.

Naturally, Reid has an amazing fashion sense, but it's laced with a surprising grain of practicality. "I always have to be comfortable wherever I'm going, whether that's on the red carpet, or just like hanging out with friends," she revealed in a since-removed interview with Disney Style. "I feel like my style is unique and everybody's style should be unique as well." Preach!

Reid showed off that unique sensibility on the red carpet, where she sported a mustard velvet jacket with embroidered flowers and edged with flowing fringe. Underneath, she wore a bright white dress with everything belted in the middle, showing off her amazing form. She accessorized with braided hoop earrings and a no-makeup look.

Melissa McCarthy

We are all living in Melissa McCarthy's world. The Emmy-winning actress, writer, and producer broke out into superstardom with her seriously hilarious performance in the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids, and she's been a Hollywood It Girl ever since. It's not surprising, given her innate acting talent, superb comedic timing, and amazing sense of humor.

On top of being busy with film and television work, McCarthy is also quite the fashionista. She even launched her own line of apparel, born out of the need to have clothing that was both stylish and accommodating of diverse sizing. "I just wasn't finding a consistent place to find things that I really wanted to wear and stay modern," she explained in an interview with Elle magazine. "I was making a lot of my stuff or having them made on shows and different jobs." That sounds super frustrating.

You wouldn't know McCarthy ever had a problem finding fashion-forward outfits as she looked incredible at the 2019 MTV Movie and Television Awards. She wore a shimmering, monochrome one-piece with long sleeves and flowing, wide legs. With her over-sized sunglasses and burgundy lip, she was a total babe. Slay, sister!

Lana Condor

If Lana Condor isn't on your radar, she should be. Thanks to her breakout role as Lara Jean in Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Condor is a rising star in Hollywood, cinching coveted parts in a variety of films and television shows. There's even a sequel to To All the Boys I've Loved Before in production, which is great news to rom-com lovers everywhere.

When it comes to her personal fashion sense, Condor has a surprising affinity for masculine looks. "I love, love, love, more than anything in the world, menswear," she professed in an interview with Who What Where magazine. "I love wearing oversized suits, I love pantsuits, I love high collars." Who knew?

However, Condor was looking fully femme on the red carpet. She wore a short, form-fitting, floral-patterned two-piece with super puffed-out sleeves and a low-cut neckline. She accessorized with dangling, three-piece earrings and a minimal makeup look. Also, big congrats to Condor for taking home the Golden Popcorn for Best Kiss with Noah Centineo!

MJ Rodriguez

In case you haven't binge-watched the insanely glamorous Netflix drama Pose yet, you're seriously missing out on some amazing stuff. That includes the gorgeous MJ Rodriguez, who plays the role of Blanca in the largest cast of transgender actors as major, recurring characters in television history, according to Vulture. Yas, queen!

Fashion, especially 1980s fashion, is a big part of Pose, something that's not lost on Rodriguez. Her mother is quite the fashionista, which had an impact on her when she was growing up. "She's someone who always loves style," she shared in an interview with Assignment X. "She does all aspects of fashion, and she kind of implemented that in my life when I was younger, so I love the fashion, and I love that it's tackled in this show, but in a very different, unique way." That makes it super personal.

True to form, Rodriguez made a bold statement at the 2019 MTV Movie and Television Awards. She was total glam in a mustard-colored dress with a plunging neckline and embroidered accents. Her eye makeup was equally bold and paired with a subtle lip for an all-around stunning look. That's how you do it!
