The Truth About Halsey's Love Life

Halsey become an instant celebrity when her debut single "Ghost" went viral. Ever since then, Halsey has enjoyed a successful music career and all that comes with it, embracing her sudden fame like she was born for it. Our girl is most definitely here to stay!

Named Ashley Nicolette Frangipane by her parents, Halsey has emerged from a chaotic childhood and a turbulent adolescence as a survivor of both mental illness and sexual assault, but she refuses to let any of that define her. Instead, Halsey works on her own terms, swimming with the big fishes in the industry and always showcasing the sheer power of her creativity.

Along with the fame, fortune, and social media following that are standard for celebs in the digital age, Halsey has also had quite the variety of high-profile romantic partnerships. And just like her songs, each of Halsey's romances has a story all its own, with their own unique quirks and dramatic flairs. Read on to discover the truth about Halsey's love life.

Halsey is bisexual and proud

Halsey isn't someone to hide aspects of herself or to try to please people by holding back. Rather, she's unafraid to share personal details about herself, including aspects of her sexuality. "I've spent the past year and the year before that working really hard to be a better representative of the LGBT community," she confessed in a video published by GLAAD in May 2018. "I'm a young bisexual woman and I've spent a large part of my life trying to validate myself ... trying to prove that who I love and the way that I feel is not a phase, it's not a part of some confusion that's going to change or could be manipulated."

Most of Halsey's public relationships have been with men, something that's been criticized by haters and that Halsey has had to shut down. "That's something I've had to fight my whole life and something I still fight," she revealed in an interview with Paper magazine. "I still see people on the internet saying, 'Of course Halsey says she's bisexual. It'll help her sell albums.'" And, of course, that's just not true.

Halsey says she's really bad at long-term relationships

If you regularly follow what Halsey is up to or the state of her love life, you probably know that she's had quite a few relationships with a variety of fellow A-listers. You probably also noticed that the vast majority of them don't last very long, something Halsey is keenly aware of. "I have human relationships like songs," she admitted in an interview with Beats 1. "So I can have a human relationship for like 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Like I'm really bad at long-term relationships." Hey, at least she's honest about it!

So just as even your favorite song becomes tiresome after a finite amount of plays, so too do Halsey's interpersonal relationships have a short shelf life. "As soon as the human relationship kind of extends passed a day, or a couple days, or a couple weeks, that's when I start to, like, malfunction," she continued.

Maybe someday Halsey will settle down, but until then, she's probably not in it for the long haul with anyone.

No, this rumor about Halsey isn't true

One unfortunate side effect of being famous is the amount of gossip and rumors that circulate about you. And for Halsey, who's such an open book about her past, the rumor mill went crazy when it found out that she relied on her body to survive when she was homeless. "It of course turns into this hyperbolized fantasy..." she scoffed in an interview with Rolling Stone. She noted that "no one was handing [her] money," adding, "But I was definitely dating dudes I wasn't into because I could crash at their apartment."

In true Halsey fashion, rather than be ashamed of what she had to do, she instead took the time to set the record straight. "I was having sex as a means of survival," she continued. "I'm lucky that that's all it was for me; for other women I knew, it wasn't just that. That's the point I was trying to make."

"Ghost" was reportedly written about Halsey's drug-addicted ex

It was Halsey's chilling song "Ghost" that made her a household name, thrusting her onto magazine covers and landing her collaborations with big shots like Justin Bieber. And while it's obvious that the song is about an ex-lover, what's not so evident right away is that it's about one of Halsey's exes who was addicted to heroin, according to Rolling Stone. "It's about looking for something in someone you can't find," she explained in an interview with MetroLyrics. "This concept of the ghost, of the person who formerly, you know, was someone that you knew and someone who still holds a physical body but the ghost in them is gone." That's intense stuff.

Additionally, the song chronicles Halsey's real-life experience of liberating herself from that toxic situation. "So, 'Ghost' for me is a song about being in a relationship with someone who is not emotionally invested," she continued. "And then finally making up your mind to leave that situation and decide that you deserve better. And I did!"

Did Halsey really write "Colors" for Matty Healy?

One of Halsey's first high-profile romances was with the brooding frontman of The 1975, Matty Healy. Allegedly, at least according to fans, her EP Room 93 is named after a hotel room the former pair shared while they were dating, according to Billboardand the song "Colors" is rumored to be about their romance. "My song 'Colors' is about being in a relationship with someone and kind of watching the vibrancy slowly start to leak out of them," she shared in an interview with Sirius XM. "Watch the colors start to fade, whether they're falling victim to drugs or falling victim to work or any sort of negative behavior that's kind of taking them away from the bright and lively person that they used to be."

For Halsey, watching the colors fade from the lover in "Colors" was a sad experience that made her long for what once was. "You can kind of see them start to fade to gray," she continued. "And you wish you had them back the way that they used to be."

Halsey was spotted out with Ruby Rose in 2015

The rumor mill went crazy back in December of 2015 when Halsey stepped out with dreamy actress Ruby Rose, who was fresh off of her split from her long-term partner and fiancée Phoebe Dahl, according to E! News. The pair went out for lunch and caught a film together in Hollywood, looking like quite the dapper couple in their semi-matching outfits. Could you imagine a more perfect pairing?

People had already been speculating that Halsey and Rose were a couple, thanks to a now-deleted tweet that Rose posted in August of that year, saying simply "hi." Halsey responded with a similar tweet, only she added heart emojis, amping up the love fest by just a notch. Naturally, people went wild in the comments, expressing their sincere hope that the two were truly dating. Whether or not they were remains a mystery, but certainly there would have been a cheering section had they gone public with the news.

Were Halsey and Justin Bieber ever more than friends?

When you think about who Justin Bieber has been romantically involved with, chances are the first person who pops to mind is his wife, Hailey Bieber. The couple secretly married in 2018, followed by a celebratory wedding a year later, according to People magazine. And before that, the singer was involved with Selena Gomez in an on-again, off-again relationship, as noted by Elle.

But for a moment in 2015, it looked like there was a lot more going on between Bieber and Halsey than a friendship. The duo performed a duet version of his song "The Feeling" on Today and got very cozy doing so. "It was a f***ing train wreck," Halsey confessed in an interview with Billboard. "You don't know fear until it's 7 a.m. and freezing cold on live television and you're not sure if Justin Bieber is going to kiss you or not." Say what?!

Of course, Bieber is off the market for good, but you can't help but wonder if there was more than a platonic relationship between them at one point.

Halsey said she changed too much when she was with Lido

It's never easy going through a breakup, even if you're not the one being dumped. So when Halsey and DJ Lido decided to call it quits in 2016, Halsey processed her emotions in the studio while making her second album. "I had killed off a version of myself just so we could make our love work," she revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone. "Sometimes you're in a relationship for so long and you become a different person. You lose yourself because you change for that person." And that's never a good thing.

Given that Halsey felt she was losing her individuality in their relationship, it was time to let her lover go and reclaim her individuality. "I put the seal on that relationship," she continued. "And fully purged myself of the feelings for that person at the same time as I finished my record."

The result was Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, which got four stars from Rolling Stone.

Did Halsey and Jared Leto ever hook up?

Could Halsey have once nursed a crush on actor Jared Leto and vice versa? Fans have had the opportunity to wonder about this potential pairing on more than one occasion, making it entirely possible that the duo may have shared a romantic bond at some point or another.

For one, Leto and Halsey were spotted cuddling up to one another at Coachella in 2016. Later on that year, the pair were photographed at the Met Gala wearing matching outfits, according to a post on Diplo's Snapchat (via 95-106 Capital FM).

Leto and Halsey were once again spotted together on stage at The Forum in Los Angeles in 2018, performing their collaboration "Love is Madness." The song appears on Thirty Seconds to Mars' album America. Once again, it's not clear if Halsey and Leto were more than friends, but, given how cuddly they were, you can only wonder.

Halsey and G-Eazy just couldn't make it work in the end

In August 2017, Halsey stepped out on stage with rapper G-Eazy and performed their collaboration "Him and I," heralding perhaps one of the most intense and important romances in Halsey's life, according to Billboard. From that point on, the two musicians frequently appeared in each other's social media posts, referring to themselves as Bonnie and Clyde. They also graced plenty of red carpets together and were not shy when it came to public displays of affection.

But alas, the two parted ways just under a year later, which was quite a shock to fans. "I normally keep this kind of thing private but provided our public nature I feel the need to inform my fans. G-Eazy and I are taking some time apart," she wrote in an Instagram story on July 3, 2018 (via Billboard). "I'm eager to continue the upcoming passage of time dedicating myself to my art and my career." She also said she wished G-Eazy the best.

Whether or not the pair will reunite in the future is unclear, though anything is possible.

Machine Gun Kelly dragged Halsey into a hip hop feud

It didn't take long after Halsey's split from G-Eazy for the rumor mill to start going. Just days after the singer broke down crying while performing at a concert, a photo surfaced of Halsey standing on a tropical beach alongside rapper Machine Gun Kelly, according to Billboard. The two had both appeared on episodes of the Showtime comedy drama Roadies in 2017.

But as it turns out, the photo that "surfaced" was actually two years old, something that Halsey pointed out on Twitter. "I'm not at the beach," she wrote in a tweet. "I'm on tour. Alone. Slow news week I guess." But that wasn't the end of it, as Halsey was later dragged into the feud between G-Eazy and Kelly when Kelly claimed that he had slept with Halsey, according to Billboard. Halsey appeared to dismiss all of it in a tweet, saying simply, "How *absolutely* pathetic."

As to whether or not Halsey and Kelly were ever an item? A source told Us Weekly that they were just friends and shared that there was no rebounding.

Halsey slid into YungBlud's DMs

In February 2019, after word on the street was that they were dating, Halsey and fellow musician Yungblud opened up about how they met each other. Apparently Halsey straight-up slid into his DMs, sending him just her phone number and a black heart emoji, much to Yungblud's surprise and delight. "I was sitting at home and ... I really wanted to have a real conversation with someone," Halsey recalled in an interview with 97.1 Amp Radio. She continued, "I just got in an Uber by myself, went downtown, and we just met up at a bar. Total stranger, I've never met him before."

For Halsey, being able to just connect with a fellow musician out of the blue reminded her how things were before she was super famous. "It was cool for me because it reminded me of when I was back in New York and making music, and I would do that," she continued.

Halsey and Yungblud collaborated on a track, "11 Minutes," and for a while really were something of an item. However, Halsey ended the relationship after about a year, according to E! News.

Halsey and Evan Peters stepped out together in 2019

Not long after splitting up with Yungblud, Halsey was spotted out and about with American Horror Story actor Evan Peters, according to People magazine. In September of 2019, the pair were seen riding a roller coaster together at Six Flags in Los Angeles, holding hands and appearing to be flirtatious with each other. After that, Peters popped up in Halsey's social media in an Instagram post in October 2019. A month later, Halsey and Peters made their first red carpet appearance together for an American Horror Story event.

People also reported that Halsey had been crushing on Evan Peters for years, starting with since-deleted tweets she reportedly made in 2012 expressing her affection for the actor. She also reportedly professed her crush on Peters on social media in 2013 and 2014, showing that this pairing could have been a romance years in the making.

Who will be Halsey's forever person?

So just who does Halsey see herself settling down with forever?

It's possible that Halsey will need to be with someone who's just as creative as she is. When asked if she sees herself partnering for life with a fellow artist, she said there would be pros and cons with such a relationship because of her personality. "It would depend. I think I would have to [settle with an artist] because no one else would be able to tolerate my craziness," she revealed in an interview on the Zach Sang Show. She added, "I'm so obnoxious, so if I did settle down with an artist I would need to be with someone that ... could handle me trying to manage us." That's because she's very hands-on in her own management, which is part of her nature.

We wish you all of the luck in the world with love, Halsey!
