You've Been Using Your Jade Roller All Wrong

In case you missed it, jade rollers have been all the rage this year, plastered over almost every beauty editor's Instagram profile and loved by fashion and beauty influencers alike. But as their popularity continues to rise, many of us are forgetting the correct way to use them. Luckily, skincare expert and facialist Abigail James spoke to Harper's Bazaar to reveal exactly how to use a jade roller.

According to James, before you begin using your jade roller, you need to clean the roller itself. Your face and neck must also be clean and completely bare. Then, when you begin to roll, it's important to follow the natural contours of your face. "It's best to use the roller back and forth, up and down and out to the side," adds James. If you're looking to achieve an uplifting massage, be sure to apply a gentle amount of pressure when moving the roller upwards. Though James insists that a roller can be used without any product, she suggests popping some oil on your face at night before rolling if you feel so inclined.

Jade rollers can be used for lymphatic drainage-style facial massages

If you are looking for more of a lymphatic drainage-style facial massage, Ross J. Barr, a practicing acupuncturist, believes you should start your rolling at the nose. "Imagine the bridge of your nose is the central point and roll away from that in all directions," he explained to Harper's Bazaar. He continued, "Imagine you are very gently rolling all the toxin build-up outward and downwards, finally rolling outward along your jaw and down the channel that runs down your neck by your ear."

However, Dr. Lamees Hamdan, founder and CEO of Shiffa Beauty, points out that when attempting this method, it's important to start rolling at your neck before tackling the rest of your face. "You need to roll your neck first to clear the lymph passageways before starting on the face," Hamdan told Glamour. She also advised that you must use your jade roller at least three times a week to see results.
