The Real Reason You Should Be Using Coffee Scrubs

There's a whole lot more to coffee than its delicious taste and ability to wake you up in the morning. As it turns out, it works wonders for your skin when applied topically, most commonly in the form of a coffee scrub.

As Erika Geraerts, the co-founder of the Australian coffee-based skincare line, Frank Body, told Teen Vogue, "In its freshly roasted and ground form, coffee is a great natural exfoliator that buffs away dry, dead skin cells and encourages skin rejuvenation." She continued, "The grind is coarser than most gel or sugar scrub exfoliants, meaning it will buff away dry and flakey skin as soon as you're in the shower."

Better still, the caffeine in coffee scrubs works to promote blood circulation and combat cellulite. "Caffeine stimulates dilation while the scrubbing motion increases circulation, plumping up the skin and making cellulite look less obvious," dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara explained to Good Housekeeping. Coffee scrubs should be used on both your face and body

Another reason to invest in a coffee scrub is that it is an antioxidant. "This is good because it helps protect the skin against damage from UV radiation and slows down the process of aging caused by sun exposure," dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon Dr. Kavita Mariwalla explained to The Derm Store. While she admits it won't cure wrinkles, it may help to prevent them, so it's definitely worth using coffee scrub on your face as well as your body.

Lastly, coffee scrubs are also said to boast anti-inflammatory properties, meaning you can say goodbye to those pesky dark circles under your eyes. According to certified clinical and research dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf, "Caffeine is soothing, anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive, which can decrease redness and puffiness," Graf told The Derm Store

The best part? Coffee scrubs can also be beneficial for your hair (via The Independent). Talk about multi-purpose!
