Here's How To Tell You're Using The Wrong Shampoo

When it comes to washing your hair, like most people, you probably either love it or hate it. And while you're bound to have argued with your friends and family over whether you need to be washing it daily, every other day, or once a week, according to celebrity stylist Loretta Wollner, what you really should be channeling your energy into is choosing the right shampoo for your hair type.

"Different hair textures require different shampoo," Wollner explains to The List. And it's easier to tell if you're using the wrong shampoo than you think. If you have fine hair and find that your hair is extra-flat or weighed down, more often than not, it's because you're using the wrong product. The same is true for thick hair that is particularly dry. Basically, if you have any hair problem, it could all come to your choice of shampoo. So, how do you know which one is best for your hair?

How to choose the right shampoo for your hair

With so many different shampoos on the market, it's no wonder some people don't always choose the product that's the best match for their hair. From the colorful and minimalist designs to the products you have seen all over Instagram, it's easy to get lured in by the wrong things. The key to choosing the right shampoo for your hair is to ignore all of the marketing. Instead, Wollner says your best bet is determining your hair type then selecting products that have been specifically designed and formulated with it in mind.

"If you have fine, straight hair, you will want something more volumizing and with less moisture," Wollner says. Thicker and curlier hair types, on the other hand, should be looking for a shampoo that gives hair a much-needed moisture boost. "Any texture should feel clean and silky if you are using proper shampoo," adds Wollner. Ultimately, the only way you'll know for sure is by testing out a few different brands and seeing firsthand what works for you.
