The Real Reason Charlotte Rae Left The Facts Of Life

Very few people can say they were a main cast member on two era-defining sitcoms at the same time, but the late Charlotte Rae certainly did. It was back in 1978 that Rae originated the character of Edna Garrett on "Diff'rent Strokes." She remained part of the show's main cast up until halfway through Season 2, in December 1979. Rae's departure from "Diff'rent Strokes" came down to the fact that the show's popularity prompted a spinoff series, with the actor reprising her role as Edna on "The Facts of Life," which premiered in August 1979. Of course, while Rae eventually returned to "Diff'rent Strokes" for a guest appearance in 1984, being on both shows full time wasn't sustainable. Hence why "The Facts of Life" became her main gig before too long. But that begs the question: Why did she end up bowing out of that show early, too?

"The Facts of Life" went through some significant changes over the course of its run on NBC. For example, the show effectively underwent a creative reboot after Season 1, with a young Molly Ringwald's job as a series regular being a notable casualty of that overhaul. Another shift occurred in 1986, when Rae chose to leave "The Facts of Life" after seven seasons. The two-part Season 8 premiere marked what would be her final appearance as Edna Garrett for 15 years. She sat out the rest of the show's eighth season, and all of its ninth and final season. Speaking to the Television Academy Foundation in 2016, Rae explained how she felt her character had simply outlived her purpose. "The kids don't need that much guidance. [...] They didn't seem to write for me to be [...] talking to them about my experiences anymore," she shared.

Charlotte Rae was always happy to reunite with her 'Facts of Life' co-stars

During her chat with the Television Academy Foundation in late 2016, "The Facts of Life" alum Charlotte Rae clarified that while leaving the beloved sitcom wasn't necessarily an easy decision (she was walking away from a lot of money, after all), it did give her the space to try more things, both personally and professionally. "I thought I'd like to go back and do stage, and travel, and enjoy myself, and do other things, which I did," the prolific actor pointed out. That being said, Rae also made it clear that she had a lot of gratitude for everything "The Facts of Life" did for her. It should come as no surprise, then, that she was more than happy to reunite with her former co-stars whenever the opportunity presented itself. For example, as we previously alluded to, Rae reprised her role as Edna Garrett in the TV movie "The Facts of Life Reunion," which aired in 2001, 15 years after she left the show itself and 13 years after it ended altogether.

Rae also took part in a number of non-scripted reunions, including a 35th anniversary panel at the PaleyFest Fall TV Preview event in 2014 and another on a special episode of Hallmark's "Home & Family" in 2016. Singing her former co-star's praises during the latter reunion, fellow "The Facts of Life" alum Kim Fields enthused, "Just to be around Charlotte [...] It certainly was, you know, just mind-blowing, quite honestly, when you're away from it, looking back at it." She continued, "When you're in it, you don't know. [...] But, at the time, I just remember thinking, 'Wow, she's so cool.'"
