Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Pricey Sweatshirt Is Raising Eyebrows

Politicians seem to always be campaigning and raising money, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's latest fundraising effort includes offering a sweatshirt emblazoned with the phrase "Tax the Rich" for $58 on her website. Some people aren't too happy with that price tag, with replies to her Twitter post of the new merch like this one: "lmao tax the rich by making your supporters pay $60 for a sweater. you really are a capitalist".

The hits kept coming. Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro led the charge, tweeting, "Only the rich can afford this idiotic sweatshirt." One replied, "At $58.00 for a sweatshirt, you're not taxing the rich, you're overcharging the stupid." Others seemed like they were maybe on board with the overall idea but not quite sure about the price point, like this tweet saying, "I don't know. I might feel like a huge hypocrite walking around in a $58 sweatshirt that says 'Tax the Rich.' $58 would go a long way at my local food bank."

Made in the U.S.A. equals higher costs

But then there's the practical side of the situation. According to AOC's website, the sweatshirts are American made and union printed, which can go along way to making the price point higher than something made overseas. One user made that practical point with a tweet saying, "Everyone: @AOC is selling a "tax the rich" sweatshirt for $58! That's way too expensive. Me, a former mass market apparel designer: Made in America. Union printed. Sounds about right. That's what it costs to pay everyone a decent wage along the way. #TaxTheRich."

AOC herself chimed in to counter the uproar with another tweet reading, "Republicans are freaking out bc we don't use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing. But what's the difference between Trump's merch and ours? Ours is made in the US. (& for GOP who joke that we shld give for free, we actually do – just volunteer)."

Some overall are just fans of the shirt, like this one asking, "Are these going to be restocked. The tax the rich hoodie is fire".
