The Truth About Amanda Seyfried's Relationship With Dominic Cooper

English actor Dominic Cooper is best known for his role in the film Mamma Mia! Of course, fans of the movie know that actress Amanda Seyfried of Mean Girls fame starred as Sophie, who gets engaged to Cooper's Sky. Mamma Mia! came out in 2008 — and Cooper and Seyfried would date for the next three years after meeting on set (via People).

Believe it or not, it was the blonde beauty who got hurt in the end, with Seyfried saying, "I got my heart broken pretty hard. After that, it's really hard to open myself up to a new person. Really hard" (via People). She also admitted the relationship ended because Cooper may still have had feelings for someone else.

Seyfried would also share that falling for a co-star is "one of the easiest things in the world," adding, "you're put in a situation where you have to make out with each other. It's easy for things to get carried away."

Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper went on to have other relationships

Seyfried would date well-known actors after her split with Cooper — namely, the star was linked to Ryan Phillippe, Josh Hartnett, and Justin Long post-breakup with her Mamma Mia! Co-star (via Ranker). Then, in 2016, Seyfried met Thomas Sadoski and the two made things official, marrying in 2017. The couple welcomed a daughter soon thereafter, and in 2020, became parents to a baby boy (via Marie Claire).

Meanwhile, Cooper dated his co-star Ruth Negga from their film Preacher. Their relationship ended in 2018, and he is now rumored to be dating fellow English actor Gemma Chan, who is best known for her role as Astrid in Crazy Rich Asians (via Daily Mail).

Although things ended romantically with Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, they still had to work together again

Seyfried and Cooper were thrown back together when they starred in the 2018 sequel to Mamma Mia!, Here We Go Again. The actress admitted her husband had some misgivings about her working with an ex, with Seyfried saying per People, "I think he has the same kind of issues that I would have if we were hanging out with his ex-girlfriend from long ago. I think it's always like, 'I'm so in love with this person, so that person must be so in love with her too.'" She also added, "I'd rather he be jealous than completely fine with it."

Meanwhile, despite Cooper admitting the situation was "delicate," he also said about Seyfried that it was "nice to spend time" with her on set (via ET Online). Perhaps complicating the former couple's dynamic is that in the sequel, Sophie and Sky are now married. But Cooper assured naysayers of his off-screen relationship with Seyfried, "She's a friend. It was always going to be OK."

Cooper also noted, "She's married now and has a beautiful child. We knew we were going to be working together [again] on a set, going back to a part which was certainly going to remind us of 10 years earlier, but I know her family, I know her mum, who was there a lot."
