This Is What Happens When You Eat Blueberries Every Day

Blueberries, with their rich color and sweet yet tart flavor, are a perfect snack when eaten plain or in addition to cereals, yogurts, and baked goods. And unlike many delicious things that we can't just have a few of, this fruit is incredibly healthy for you. That's right, eating blueberries frequently is a good habit to get into.

Both the highbush blueberries (which you generally find in stores across the U.S.) and lowbush blueberries (commonly known as wild blueberries, which are a bit smaller and a little more tart) are low in calories and high in nutrients (via Healthline). While the wild variety are slightly higher in antioxidants, both types make an excellent snack. Just one cup of these pretty little berries provides 4 grams of fiber, 24 percent of your daily vitamin C requirement, 25 percent of your manganese requirement, 36 percent of your vitamin K requirement — and all while containing a minuscule 84 calories.

Blueberries are high in antioxidants

Blueberries are among the highest in antioxidants among common fruits and veggies, and the main antioxidant compound in these little powerhouses is a type called flavanoids, the same kind in wine and dark chocolate (via Healthline). Antioxidants work in the body by scavenging cell-damaging free radicals and, according to News-Medical, flavanoids have antiviral, antibacterial, anti-aging, anti-cancer, and anti-allergy properties, making them astonishingly good for you.

Further, according to Psychology Today, flavanoids "protect against and even reverse the cognitive declines seen from aging." In other words, it not only helps your mind age more healthily, but it can actually reverse age-related declines in cognitive function like memory loss and confusion.

Yes, a heaping scoop of blueberries atop your yogurt tastes delicious and delivers essential nutrients, boosting your immune system, keeping you feeling younger longer, and even protecting your brain! That's a sweet treat we can definitely get behind.
