Here's What We Know About Prince Harry's Plans To Return To The UK
Prince Harry may not be on the best of terms with his family at the moment, but he's not expected to miss the funeral of his Grandfather Prince Philip, who passed away Friday morning at Windsor Castle. The Telegraph reported that Prince Harry "is expected to return," despite travel restrictions, but Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is not expected to travel with him because she is pregnant. Under current guidelines, Harry should have been expected to quarantine for ten days upon arrival, but there is an exemption for people who are attending the funeral of a family member.
While there will be eight days of national mourning for Prince Philip, who is also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, COVID-19 restrictions mean his funeral will be very different from any others which have been held in the past. NBC News reports that he will not have a state funeral — which the Prince had requested, and he will not lie in state. Instead, his body will be kept in Windsor Castle before the funeral at St George's Chapel.
It's also not certain just what the service will look like, since funerals in the UK are currently limited to thirty mourners or less.
Harry was close to Prince Philip
Prince Harry was said to be very close to his grandfather because they shared a military background — they used to appear together at engagements during Remembrance Sunday (via Town and Country). And while Harry might not have seen his grandfather for more than a year before his death, during an interview with James Corden, he said both his Grandfather Prince Phillip and his Grandmother Queen Elizabeth were able to stay in touch with him through Zoom. He also said that the Duke hardly bothered to end a call by disconnecting by hitting the "Leave" button, because he chose to slam the laptop shut after the call instead (via The Telegraph).
Harry and Meghan Markle have also turned the landing page of their Archewell website into a tribute to Prince Philip. The site, which is now in black, features a simple dedication that reads, "In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburg 1921-2021. Thank you for your service...you will be greatly missed" (via Archewell).
