The Truth About Maisie Williams And Sophie Turner's Matching Tattoos

You must've been living under a rock if you weren't obsessed with "Game of Thrones" or knew of someone who was. The epic show fascinated us with white walkers, dragons and magic, and loads of disturbing drama between family and the story of the two Stark sisters, Sansa and Arya, played by Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, respectively.

The most shocking and unpredictable show where even the actors didn't know who would make it to the next season had the whole world hooked as we continued to root for two fan favorites through their own set of challenges. The Stark sisters starred in "Game of Thrones," appearing in the premiere episode, "Winter is Coming," that aired on HBO starting in 2011. Though the two on-screen sisters didn't have much shared time together in front of the camera, they are actually BFFs in real life and have permanent matching ink to prove it.

What is the meaning behind their matching tattoos?

In an interview with E! News, Sophie Turner revealed her tattoo that she shares with Maisie Williams. "She's one of my best friends in the whole world. We got matching tattoos," she told E! in 2016, showing off a date that read "07.08.09" in peach ink on her forearm. "That's the date that we both heard that we got 'Game of Thrones' on ... I got it the other day. [It's] still a bit crusty."

Turner shared that she and Williams had always discussed getting matching tattoos one day, and that the date in question was "really significant." She added, "With 'Thrones' we were always planning from Season 1, like if we could make it all the way through, hopefully, we could all get a matching thing."

For her part, Williams shared an adorable black and white photo of the two on Instagram with the caption, "Happy 7th August," honoring the important date for the duo.

Where does their friendship stand now?

The two talented young actresses grew up together, as they were only 13 and 12 years old when they found out that they had been selected to play Sansa and Arya Stark in the show, making them both household names. No one was safe in the "Game of Thrones" universe, so Williams and Turner decided to get the special date marked on their arms during a filming break. Though they got the tattoo in 2016, we can see the two share pictures of each other on their social media to this day.

Both Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams went on to get more "Game of Thrones" themed tattoos, according to Insider, but the one they got together will always be very special to them because it marks the beginning of their journey.

Turner told Dr. Phil that the two bonded so well because they understood each other as the Stark sisters, and as such became best friends at such a young age while filming together, as noted by USA Today. According to Harper's Bazaar, Williams was even one of the maids of honor at Turner's wedding to Joe Jonas in June 2019. We hope to see this beautiful friendship flourish for years to come.
