The Real Reason RPDR's Season 14 Snatch Game Didn't Sit Right With Fans
There are challenges on the hit drag queen competition reality show "RuPaul's Drag Race" that fans can count on seeing with each season. For example, each season you can expect to see the queens compete in a musical challenge known as a Rusical — a combination of musical and RuPaul — which makes the contestants sing, dance, and act in an original production made for the show, though they're often inspired by real-world productions (via Billboard).
While some Rusicals can be hit or miss, some of them turn out pretty good. For instance, the "HERstory of the World" Rusical from "RuPaul's Drag Race All Star" Season 2, which told the story of powerful women throughout history (or, ahem, HERstory), has remained a beloved challenge.
However, there is one reoccurring challenge that fans look forward to even more than the annual Rusical. A take on the classic game show from the '70s, "Match Game," the queens have to make RuPaul laugh while impersonating celebrities in the cleverly-named Snatch Game (via The Los Angeles Times). This isn't too surprising, either, as the show is a culmination of many pop culture moments. "RuPaul's Drag Race" is inspired by "Paris is Burning," a well-known queer documentary, too.
The challenge has become a make-or-break event for the queens each season not only because it usually occurs around halfway through the season but also because it can make or break their careers outside of the show. However, the Snatch Game from Season 14 of "RuPaul's Drag Race broke the contestants.
With such a strong cast, fans were expecting more
"RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 14 saw one of the worst Snatch Game performances in the history of the show (via AV Club). While this season's cast holds consistenly funny queens like Willow Pill and Bosco, there were no laughs to be had during the challenge. RuPaul was noticeably uncomfortable, and if DeJa Skye wasn't on the panel doing an impression of rapper Lil Jon, the challenge would have been an even bigger disaster.
Fans were incredibly unhappy with the way the episode went down (via Sportskeeda). The challenge is one they look forward to every season, so it's no surprise that they let their feelings known on Twitter. One fan wrote, "Best cast in a while with THE WORST SNATCH GAME EVER."
"I never thought I'd say this, but that has to be the worst Snatch Game in history, right?" another fan chimed in. This season's Snatch Game was disappointing for fans who look forward to this challenge every year. Still, everyone's poor performances made DeJa Skye shine even brighter, firmly putting her in the Snatch Game hall of fame.
Fans look forward to Snatch Game every season
"RuPaul's Drag Race" has been hosting the Snatch Game as an annual challenge since Season 2. Those who perform well in the Snatch Game typically do well and go to the end of the competition (via Primetimer). In the history of the show, only two season winners have been in the bottom two during Snatch Game. Those queens were Yvie Oddly of Season 11 and Trixie Mattel on "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" Season 3. the rest of the queens have either been safe, in the top 3 for the week, or won the challenge.
Snatch Game has given "Drag Race" fans some of their favorite memories from the show. Whether it was Bob The Drag Queen performing as both Uzo Aduba from "Orange is The New Black" and legendary actress Carol Channing during the Season 8 challenge or Bianca Del Rio wowing us all with her portrayal of RuPaul's favorite reality TV star, Judge Judy, these performances have lasting effects on both the fans and the queens (via Collider).
This is why Season 14's Snatch Game didn't sit well with fans. Fans are undoubtedly concerned about how this bad Snatch Game will affect the rest of the reason, which isn't surprising seeing as the following episode saw seven queens lip syncing for their lives, with only DeJa Skye safe from elimination because of her Lil Jon performance. Fans can only hope that Season 15's Snatch Game in 2023 is better.
