Here's Who Twitter Thinks Should Play Kate Middleton In The Crown

For five seasons, fans of both the British royals and good drama have tuned in eagerly to "The Crown." The hit Netflix series chronicles the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, including her life before she became queen, her marriage to Prince Philip, her complicated relationships with her children and her sister, Princess Margaret, and the local and global events that shaped her monarchy then and now.

Naturally, viewers aren't meant to see "The Crown" as a literal biography series. There are plenty of details "The Crown" left out of the story of the queen and her family — including tidbits about Prince Charles and Princess Diana's doomed marriage. But there's enough accuracy mixed in with the invention to make it all seem plausible. The series has earned 63 Emmy nominations and 21 wins, including statues for queen portrayers Olivia Colman and Claire Foy, and Gillian Anderson for her turn as Margaret Thatcher.

The much-anticipated fifth season is due to drop in November 2022, according to Vogue. Expect to see coverage of events from the 1990s through the early 2000s, including Princess Diana's tragic death and the first glimpse of the monarchy's next-generation, including Prince William and his future wife, Kate Middleton. Furthermore, some of the castings have already been announced. Imelda Staunton will portray the queen in her later years, and Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip. But the younger royals have yet to be cast, and the social media world has lots of opinions on the matter.

Fans of The Crown are very enthusiastic about Daisy Edgar-Jones

Variety recently announced a juicy casting call: Netflix is looking to audition young actors for the roles of Prince William and Kate Middleton in "The Crown." Since the series is said to end in the early 2000s, this indicates the action will focus on the truth of William and Kate's early relationship, when both were college students enjoying an active social life.

The buzz on Twitter quickly centered on British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones, currently starring in "Normal People." One fan raved, "Petition for Daisy Edgar-Jones to play as Kate Middleton in The Crown!"

The topic was also raised on the "Today" show in April 2022, when Edgar-Jones and Andrew Garfield were guests promoting their new true-crime series, "Under the Banner of Heaven." When asked if she knew about the online support, the actress was genuinely shocked. "Oh, my gosh, that's the first I've heard of that," she said. "That's cool." She added that she "wouldn't say no" if the part were offered to her. Then Al Roker joked, "Would it help if Andrew wore kind of a baldish wig?"

Edgar-Jones certainly fits the bill on one count. Per Variety, the casting crew is looking for someone with "a strong physical resemblance" to Middleton, known for her long chestnut hair, trim figure, and dignified posture. With her looks, plus her acting skills, Edgar-Jones may just be the perfect candidate for the coveted "Crown" role.
