The Truth About Scarlett Johansson And Josh Hartnett's Relationship

Thanks to her films in and outside of the Marvel universe, Scarlett Johansson has quickly become one of the most recognized faces in cinema. And with that fame comes a lot of interest in to her love life. Currently married to comedian and "Saturday Night Live" writer Colin Jost, Johansson has previously tied the knot with Ryan Reynolds and journalist Romain Dauriac — with whom she shares a daughter (via Us Weekly). Speaking of her marriage to Reynolds, Johansson reflected on her naivety as a 23-year-old. "I didn't really have an understanding of marriage [at the time]," she told Vanity Fair. "Maybe I kind of romanticized it, I think, in a way."

In between her marriages to Reynolds and Dauriac, Johansson was linked to a lot of actors. And as the actress is pretty private when it comes to her personal life, it's hard to confirm whether some were actually official. But one connection that certainly was a thing was her year-long relationship with actor Josh Hartnett (via People).

Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett met on a movie set

According to Female First, Johnasson and Hartnett started dating after meeting on the set of Brian De Palma's crime thriller "The Black Dahlia" in April 2005. By June, the couple went public after attending Live 8 together in London. "I really do try to keep my personal life private," Johansson said at the time (via Novinite.com). "But yes, I was there with somebody who is very lovely." The actress would later go on to describe Hartnett as "very sweet" during a 2006 interview with Allure (via People). "He's a good boy," she said. "A great person. I'm very lucky and I'm very happy."

As for Hartnett, he was equally as private about his relationship with Johansson. However, he did briefly discuss how their careers intertwined on more than one occasion. Speaking to Playboy (via the Guardian) about regretting turning down the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan's adaptation of the caped crusader, Hartnett said that when he decided the role "wasn't for me," it affected his ability to be cast in other films by the director. "He didn't want to put me in The Prestige," Hartnett said. "They not only hired their Batman for it, they also hired my girlfriend [Scarlett Johansson] at the time."

Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansson struggled with long-distance

Sadly, Johansson and Hartnett's relationship didn't last very long. Describing their break-up as a "really painful" experience, the actor said their split came down to conflicting schedules. "It was difficult spending so much time apart with all our different commitments and both of us flying all over the world," he told the Mirror in 2007. "At the end of the day, we're just ordinary people and it didn't work."

According to a source, Hartnett thought Johansson "was really special and felt they might last the distance." But, as they continued, "the pressure got too much and when they saw each other they'd row as they were both exhausted."

Hartnett opened up a little more about his relationship with Johansson during an interview with InTouch (via Celebitchy), suggesting that another cause of their split was down to jealousy. "Seeing their significant other in the arms of a beautiful actress is difficult," he explained. "It's hard to be like, 'Oh, that's just work.' It is, but you're on location with this other person for months, so there's jealously."

Josh Hartnett married Tasmin Egerton in 2021

Aside from Scarlett Johansson, Josh Hartnett has been linked to a fair few women in Hollywood including Amanda Seyfried, Mischa Barton, Penelope Cruz, Sienna Miller, and Julia Stiles, according to Ranker. He also dated Rihanna for a while in late 2007, which came to light when the singer revealed she "would be lying if I told you we were not more than just friends" to the Mirror.

Hartnett has been surprisingly open about his dating past, but only when it pertains to actresses. "I don't recommend it to young actors," he told Elle in 2014. "You can make a lot of enemies in the business that way. But when you work with somebody every day, it's like trial dating." He went on to add that dating a co-star can lead to developing "a fantasy about them. It doesn't always work out, does it?"

Josh Hartnett's current relationship with British actress Tamsin Egerton certainly worked out. Having first met on the set of "The Lovers" in 2011, the couple got married in November 2021 and have three children together (via Vanity Fair).

Scarlett Johansson was married to Ryan Reynolds

As Johansson started to transition from child acting to adult roles in the early 2000s, her relationships started to gain attention. She was first linked to musician Jack Antonoff, who she dated after meeting in high school (via InStyle). There are even photos of them attending prom together, courtesy of Page Six. Following their breakup in 2002, Johansson was then linked to Jared Leto and Derek Jeter (via Us Weekly) before she began dating Hartnett.

A couple of years after the actress split from Hartnett, she began dating Ryan Reynolds who she would go on to marry. However, their romance wouldn't last long as the couple decided to divorce in 2010. After being linked to Sean Penn (via Daily Mail), Johansson married for a second time to journalist Romain Dauriac in 2014 after the birth of their daughter, Rose Dorothy, per People. Two years later, the couple decided to file for divorce. "We remain close friends and co-parents with a shared commitment to raising our daughter in a loving and compassionate environment," the couple said in a joint statement (via E! News).

Scarlett Johansson called Colin Jost the love of her life

Shortly after her second divorce, Johansson revealed that she hadn't lost faith in marriage. "The idea of building a family, making a family, and having that work, I like that idea," she told Vanity Fair. "I think that would be wonderful. I've always wanted that. I wanted that also in my marriage to my daughter's father as well."

It seems that Johansson has found the right person in Colin Jost, who she married in October 2020 (via Elle). The couple initially started dating in 2017 before making it red carpet official at the premiere of "Avengers: Infinity War" in April 2018, per Brides. Jost proposed a year later, and by the end of 2019 Johansson declared that Jost was the love of her life during an appearance on "SNL" (via YouTube).

In August 2021, the couple revealed they'd had their first child together — a son called Cosmo. Speaking on an episode of "Late Night with Seth Meyers", the host explained how his mom wasn't too sure about the name they chose. "My mom, I would say was slightly thrown by it," he said. "[She] didn't quite understand it, I don't know if she thought it was kind of like a hippy thing." Johansson would go on to tell Access Hollywood that the name just "came out of the ethos" and that there wasn't really any explanation behind it (via YouTube).
