Inside Kyle And Summer's Relationship On The Young And The Restless

"The Young and the Restless" fans were crushed when Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) and Summer Newman (Hunter King) left Genoa City behind last year for life and careers far off in Italy. They had become a beloved pair over the years and finally had their chance to be happy. Fans were further dismayed when they made a brief comeback in October of 2021 and we learned they finally got married — off screen (via Soaps In Depth). That's right. Fans didn't even get to see their long-awaited (second) wedding.

But a lot can happen in about six months time and Kyle just returned to Genoa City for good, with Summer staying behind because of work. However, that's not going to last long. As of this writing, Summer is expected to return by May of 2022, played by a brand-new actress, as Allison Lanier is replacing Hunter King (via Soap Opera Digest). Summer and Kyle's story will continue on-screen, but how did they get to where they are today?

Summer and Kyle grew up together

There was a time when some people wondered if Summer Newman and Kyle Abbott might be brother and sister as there was never a conclusive paternity test done when Summer's mother, Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford), was pregnant. Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) raised Summer as his own, but Kyle's dad, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), could have been her dad. Eventually, when Summer and Kyle grew closer as teens, a test proved that Nick was indeed Summer's dad (via Soaps In Depth).

Once Summer and Kyle knew they were not siblings and Summer got out of a bad, impulsive marriage to Austin Travers (Matthew Atkinson), she and Kyle began to date when Kyle (then played by Lachlan Buchanan) returned from New York. However, they realizes they didn't get along very well when Summer thought living in New York had made Kyle a different person than she remembered (via Soaps.com). Eventually, Kyle returned to New York and Summer left town too.

Summer and Kyle both return to Genoa City

In 2018, Summer and Kyle both returned to town a little older and wiser, but both also had quite an attitude about them. Summer was still played by Hunter King who had taken some time off to work on the primetime show "Life In Pieces (via IMDb), but Kyle was now played by Michael Mealor. Summer and Kyle also didn't want to admit they were still attracted to one another as she pursued her mother's boyfriend, Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson), according to Soaps.com.

In fact, they even made a bet that she wouldn't be able to seduce Billy by the end of the month and if Kyle won, then Summer agreed to sleep with him. When Summer lost the bet, Kyle couldn't bring himself to have frivolous sex (via Soap Central). That's when Summer started to realize she might still want Kyle, but she was also too late — at that time, at least.

Kyle falls for Lola Rosales, marries Summer

Summer was surprised when Kyle fell for a new girl in town, Lola Rosales (Sasha Calle), and she did her best to break them up. It helped that Lola would frequently pick fights with Kyle about him flaunting his money when she did not grow up wealthy. When Lola turned him down for a romantic Valentine's Day at the Abbott cabin, Summer showed up instead. Kyle rejected her as Lola watched through the window and misunderstood the scene, according to Soap Dirt.

Later, when Lola tried to smooth things over with Kyle and visited the Abbott house, she was pushed into the pool by her crazed sister-in-law, Mia (Noemi Gonzales), as Mia thought she was Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway). For some reason, this fall into the pool resulted in Lola needing a liver transplant (via Soaps in Depth). Of course, Summer was a match, but was also afraid to go under the knife. So, Kyle offered to marry Summer in exchange for a part of her liver. Summer agreed and they wed (via Soaps.com).

Kyle leaves Summer, marries Lola

Kyle and Summer's first marriage didn't last long because Kyle couldn't stay away from Lola, so the two divorced and Kyle married Lola just a few months later. However, his marriage to Lola was doomed from the start because all they did was fight about money. Plus, Kyle also started spending a lot of time with Summer on a professional level where they realized they still had feelings for one another (via Soaps.com).

Lola was not very surprised when Kyle confessed to her that he was still in love with Summer and the two parted ways. However, Summer was a little gun-shy about marrying him again after the first debacle over the liver and ran away the weekend they planned to elope. She finally came around and confessed her fears to Kyle, who promised never to hurt her again. Even when Kyle learned he fathered a little boy named Harrison during the time he was living in New York, he told Summer immediately and refused to hide the truth (via Soaps in Depth).

Summer and Kyle finally get it together and leave town

For some reason, Summer decided she hated Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) as soon as she arrived in Genoa City, so Sally decided to hate Summer right back and did her best to ruin Summer's life. She did this by getting her a job offer with an Italian design company so she would leave Kyle behind. While that doesn't sound so bad, Sally did this in conjunction with Harrison's mother, a crazed woman named Tara Locke (Elizabeth Leiner), who told Summer if she didn't get out of town, she'd take off with Harrison and never let Kyle see his newfound son again (via Soaps In Depth).

When the truth came out, Kyle flew to Italy with Harrison in tow to live with Summer. When they appeared as guests at the wedding between Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) and Ashland Locke (then played by Richard Burgi), they were newlyweds, having married off-screen just days before (via Soaps In Depth). This disappointed fans who didn't see a wedding, but making them happy at the same time because they knew Summer and Kyle, known on social media as Skyle, were finally together.
