Inside Justin Bieber's Relationship With Hailey Bieber

Canadian-born singer Justin Bieber dominated the music industry in 2009 with his debut album "My World." The nearly instant overnight success and influence led to Bieber's name being synonymous with "teen idol." The Bieber phenomenon swiftly grew to all corners of the world, with his face soon plastered everywhere, from glossy teen magazines to Times Square billboards. Throughout world tours and sold-out stadiums, many girls lined up for hours just to get a glimpse of the teen heartthrob. But one special person stood out from the rest: Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin).

Hailey, the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin, soon dominated the world in her own ways. With ad campaigns for name brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Guess, Hailey caught Justin's attention throughout the years of their respective rise to stardom. Justin, whose dating history previously made headlines with fellow pop star Selena Gomez, would eventually marry Hailey. Their journey to the altar led us to look inside some of the lesser-known details of the power couple's relationship throughout the years.

They met back in 2009

While making rounds for his press tour for "My World" in 2009, Justin appeared on "Today" to perform. In a crowded lobby of the set production, an enthusiastic Stephen Baldwin facilitated the introduction between Hailey and Justin. "My name is Steve Baldwin," he said, offering a firm handshake to his future son-in-law. "This is my daughter Hailey," he added, motioning for a timid 13-year-old Hailey to extend her hand to the pop star. Justin was seen making his signature classic move — tousling his head to the side to create a swift hair swoop motion. Flashing his pearly whites, he shook Hailey's hand. "We've been enjoying your music," Stephen said.

Hailey later shared with Vogue, "It was never that crazed, screaming thing. I didn't think about it in any kind of way except for the fact that he was cute. Everybody had a crush on him. But for the first few years we had a weird age gap."

They initially denied that they were dating

Justin and Hailey Bieber's first public outing dates back to November 2014. The two were first spotted together at Hillsong church, alongside model Kendall Jenner. This sighting sparked the initial rumors and speculation of their involvement, as Justin had just recently come out of a relationship with Selena Gomez. The next wave of rumors hit a month later when they the two were seen together again.

However, that same month, Hailey told E! News "I've known him since I was so young — since I was like 13 — and we've just been good friends over the year." She continued, saying, "We have just stayed close and there's nothing more to it than that." Justin's voiced a similar statement on his Instagram, writing, "People are crazy. I'm super single."

It wasn't long before they couldn't continue to fend off the rumors, as their public outings grew — from exclusive parties to tropical vacations. Eventually, Hailey came forward in February 2016 to publicly state they were indeed in a relationship, though she said they were not "exclusive" (via E! News).

They spent some time apart from each other

In 2016 — the same year their relationship was confirmed — Justin and Hailey Bieber went their separate ways. The reasoning for this separation was never shared to the public; however, Hailey would share some hints of a dramatic fall-out.

"Negative things happened that we still need to talk about and work through," Hailey shared with Vogue. "Fizzled would not be the right word — it was more like a very dramatic excommunication." She continued, saying, "There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out."

Eagle-eyed fans also noticed that Justin unfollowed Hailey on Instagram (via Teen Vogue). After the pair broke up, Justin went on to briefly date model Sofia Richie before rekindling his relationship with former flame Selena Gomez in 2017. Meanwhile, Hailey and Shawn Mendes were rumored as a new couple.

But, as Jailey fans of course know, neither of these relationships would last, and Justin and Hailey would reunite in 2018 (via E! News).

Fans had some thoughts about their relationship

As Justin Bieber superfans were long rooting for a happily ever after for him and Selena Gomez, not everyone was pleased with his relationship with Hailey. And on Hailey's end, many fans were left confused about their union, as just months prior to their engagement in July 2018, she had seemingly made her red carpet debut with Shawn Mendes at the Met Gala. When asked about the engagement news, Mendes shared with the Australian TV show "The Project": "I texted Hailey the day of and I said congrats. That's what it is. Everybody wants there to be more — there's not" (via Entertainment Tonight).

Rumors would swiftly swirl that their relationship was more of a publicity stunt, set up by Bieber's producer to garner press and attention, as fans noted that paparazzi were more inclined to capture Bieber's photograph once their engagement news surfaced. Eventually, fans and speculators would settle down and accept the relationship. The pair continued their engagement for the next year before tying the knot in September 2018.

Faith plays an important role in their lives

"The common denominator, I promise you, is always church," Hailey told Vogue, crediting faith to the reconciliation of their relationship. The two ended up reconnecting in June 2018 at a religious conference in Miami. "By then we were past the drama," Hailey explained.

Growing up in the Christian church, Hailey often found herself the subject of criticism regarding the way she led her life, which can be described as a little less traditional, in large part due to her modeling career. Similarly, Justin's practice is a little less traditional. "I wouldn't consider myself religious," Justin told Vogue. "That confuses a lot of people because they're like, Well, you go to church. I believe in the story of Jesus — that's the simplicity of what I believe." Justin further explained that he "[doesn't] believe in all the religious elitism and pretentiousness, like people are better than you because they come to church, like you have to go to church and dress a certain way."

They got married soon after becoming engaged

Justin and Hailey were quietly engaged in the Bahamas in July 2018. Rumors of the engagement swirled, as cameras captured Hailey wearing a large diamond ring on her finger. Though they wanted to keep this engagement private for some time, Justin announced the news to the world via Instagram. "Was gonna wait a while to say anything but word travels fast, listen plain and simple Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you!" he wrote on social media. "So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindly."

Hailey soon after graced the cover of Vogue Mexico, flashing her giant diamond for the world to see. In September 2018, the two married in a quiet courtroom in Manhattan. A full year later on September 30th, 2019, they celebrated their marriage with a second wedding at a beachfront resort in South Carolina, where they were surrounded by friends (via Forbes).

There's no place like multiple homes

Throughout their relationship, Justin and Hailey have had a total of four homes — two in Beverly Hills, one in Toluca Lake, and another in Ontario, Canada. Their first home was a rented property in Toluca Lake, where the pair moved in shortly after their marriage, according to People. The 7,000-square-foot Spanish-style abode came equipped with five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and an abundance of amenities — from a gym to a pool to a personal recording studio.

They then went on to purchase their first Beverly Hills home for $8.5 million. Two years later, the couple sold the mansion and instead spent much of their time at their Ontario lakehouse, which they purchased for $5 million in 2018 (via TMZ). The home boasts 9,000 square feet, a two-story wine cellar, and, of course, a spectacular lake view. In 2020, the couple purchased another Beverly Hills home — this one for a whopping $26 million and features a tennis court, an infinity pool, and 2.5 acres, according to People. Whichever home they choose to reside in, they're sure to find there's no shortage of amenities.

They value their privacy

In a February 2022 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Hailey revealed, "Behind closed doors, we're two really normal people that just have not-normal lifestyles and careers." However, she expressed her desire to know no longer discuss her life with the singer. "It doesn't feel worth it to me anymore when I try to have an open conversation with someone like you and then it gets taken out of context," she told the interviewer. She continued, saying, "The media has always been a disgusting thing."

Justin also desires privacy. With paparazzi often towing by him, fans are quick to be tipped off to a Bieber sighting. Unfortunately, sometimes this hits a little too close to home — literally. "How do you convince yourself it's not completely inappropriate and disrespectful to wait outside my home to gawk, stare and take pictures as I walk into my apartment," he vented in an Instagram Story in 2020 (via Billboard).

Baby, baby ... oh?

In 2022, Hailey Bieber shared her thoughts on parenthood with The Wall Street Journal. "I think ideally in the next couple of years we would try. But there's a reason they call it try, right? You don't know how long that process is ever going to take," she said. She elaborated, "There's this thing that happens for women when you get married. Everybody always assumes it's: First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby. Well, what about all the things I want to accomplish in my business?"

Justin shared a similar sentiment in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in December 2020 (via Today). "I think Hailey still has some things she wants to accomplish as a woman," he explained. "And I think she just is not ready yet, and I think that's OK." In his documentary, "Justin Bieber: Our World", the singer expressed his interest in wanting to have a baby in 2021, but assured his wife, "It's up to you, babe" (via Decider).
