Shampooing Twice Might Be The Vital Step Missing From Your Haircare Routine

How often should you wash your hair to retain its natural shine? Every three days, according to an interview with trichologist Anabel Kingsley for Vogue. The scalp expert shared that most peoples' hair should remain clean within that 72-hour period. However, that's not always the case and improper shampooing might be why. Enter: the double shampoo wash method.

We might live in one of the most beauty-savvy time periods in history, but many of us still aren't taking care of our scalps well enough. In the same way that double cleansing is recommended for your face, washing with shampoo twice is recommended for your scalp and hair health. Just like double cleansing facial skin, your first wash is to clear out the buildup of dirt and oils and the second wash is to purify the healthy skin (or hair) that remains. Not only does this shampooing method detoxify your hair, but double cleansing keeps it looking healthier for longer.

Why the experts love this wash method

With our busy lives, we all want our hair to feel cleaner for longer and that's possible with the double shampoo cleansing method. This tried and tested approach to washing your hair is recommended for everyone, no matter how thick or fine the hair, for its ability to purify your scalp and eliminate buildup. "It allows for proper cleansing, giving you longer periods of time with a clean scalp and keeping away the oily hair problem," hairstylist Sal Salcedo told Byrdie. He also noted that people who double cleanse have to wash their hair less and this time between washes eliminates the issue over shampooing.

One of the only problems that arise when double shampooing is forgetting to rinse the shampoo out completely. In an interview with Elle, hairstylist professional Bridget Brager cautioned people against making this mistake, noting that excess shampoo left after the shower will give you the opposite effect of your intended results. Other than this occasional user error, the double shampooing method is not only recommended but encouraged by Brager as her top trick for nurturing hair health.

Does it require special shampoo?

When we up the ante with any beauty regime, we want to make sure we're using the right products to do it. For double cleansing, this can include indulging in specialty shampoos that are specifically designed to keep hair cleaner for longer, like micellar shampoo and Act + Acre's cold-pressed cleanser. However, these high ticket items can get expensive, and while products like detox shampoos are worth the hype, they might not be necessary.

"Shampoo twice with your regular shampoo instead of using a clarifying shampoo. I don't recommend it for every wash, but it's definitely an option if you don't have or don't want to get a clarifying shampoo," shared beauty influencer Audrey Victoria in a viral hair washing hacks video on YouTube

Although she doesn't recommend double washing every day, it's still beneficial to do it if you're planning on skipping a few days in between your next cleanse. That way, your hair stays cleaner and in better shape for an extended period of time.
