Coachella 2023 Weekend 1: 10 Looks That Missed The Mark

In case you've been living under a rock, the first weekend of Coachella 2023 just happened. Starting on Friday, April 14 and set to finish on Sunday, April 23, the festival has a more star-studded line-up than ever. The headlining acts for Coachella 2023 are Bad Bunny, Frank Ocean, and BLACKPINK, all of whom will take to the stage again on weekend two.

Still, if you know anything about the festival, you know all of these untold truths of Coachella, and you're well aware of the huge focus on what to wear. While people mainly attend for the music, Coachella fashion has become its own sub-genre of style in the past few years. In fact, frequent Coachella attendee Vanessa Hudgens has often been referred to as the "Queen of Coachella" because of her boho chic outfits, proving that the fashion really is just as important as who's headlining.

However, it's just as easy to miss the mark with a Coachella fit as it is to kill it. We've gathered up ten of the looks that maybe didn't quite live up to expectations during the first weekend of the festival.

Storm Reid

The idea behind this outfit may have been fun, but unfortunately Storm Reid's look just doesn't quite cut it. The light pink shimmery top suits her skin tone beautifully, but the cutoff denim shorts don't mesh well and make the outfit appear pretty basic overall. Reid does get bonus points for her comfy sneakers though, as plenty of celebs/influencers were seen wearing shoes that were definitely not recommended festival footwear.

Sara Sampaio

Although the free-flowing festival vibes of this fit are immaculate, Sara Sampaio's look just doesn't quite work. The bejeweled butterfly-style crochet top clashes with the lime green sequin shorts to create an outfit that's an eyesore, although the heart-shaped sunglasses do somewhat make up for the mismatched outfit. Let's hope her heeled sandals were just for the photo, they don't seem like a very good footwear choice for the desert.

Hailey Bieber

Though definitely not as bad as others on this list, Hailey Bieber made the list purely because her fit isn't very creative. Instead of glitter, fringe, and festival vibes, she wore baggy jeans and a simple white tank top, accessorizing only with a gold belly chain and choker. Unlike other celebs who flew under the radar in casual outfits by not posting them (we're looking at you, Jenna Ortega) Bieber shared her outfit via Instagram.

Alexis Ren

Low rise is undeniably in at the moment, so theoretically this look should have worked. Nevertheless, there's something about the length of the black tank top and just how low rise the skirt is that looks slightly odd. The boots are also a not-great choice because the skirt is longer — sandals would have been better. The outfit is also quite basic because of the lack of accessories. Alexis Ren isn't even wearing a necklace, which gives the outfit an unfinished quality.

Charli D'amelio

Charli D'Amelio's second day Coachella look almost hit the mark. The heavy boots match well with the black lace and general gothic vibe of this look, but the huge chunky belt just doesn't quite go with the rest of the outfit and ruins the delicate feel of it. D'Amelio's outfit is almost bringing back the boho vibes of Coachella festivals past, but the pieces of it aren't fitting together in the right way.

Tasha Ghouri

The all-blue color palette of Tara Ghouri's outfit already means it suits her well, as does the cute detail in the front of her hair. While the matching crochet top and shorts match together better than Sara Sanpario's crochet top and sequin shorts, this look still appears slightly disjointed because of the over-the-knee cowboy boots. If the boots had been swapped out for sneakers, it might have felt more cohesive. However, Coachella is in the desert, so the cowboy boots do make sense for the theme.

Madison Beer

Madison Beer looks stunning as ever, but unfortunately, this outfit swung by the mark completely. The knee-length rain boots with the frilly bow are already an odd pairing, but the short black outfit also seems disproportionate to the boots and sock combo. The shorts are so simple they seem like a last-minute choice, and they just don't mesh well with the bralette top due to the top being cut lower. Beer wasn't wearing many accessories either, which could have helped tie the look together.

Sophia Tuxford

Coachella fashion is all about experimenting, but this outfit is an experiment gone wrong. A positive thing that can be said about it is that it plays into the rave aspect of festival fashion, which is a major plus. However, the colors chosen for the outfit are jarring and almost clown-like due to the neon shades. The bottom half looks like a bikini cover-up, whereas the top half may be hitting the 2023 asymmetrical trend but doesn't quite work with the bottom asymmetry.

James Charles

James Charles may have been trying to make artist chic a thing, but it actually just looks like he came to Coachella straight after work. The outfit itself isn't terrible, and the silhouette of the bag is super cool. However, this doesn't change the fact that the specific tan color of the pants is very similar to actual painter overalls — perhaps with different pants, this look would have been different.

Kendall Jenner

Similarly to Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner's extremely lowkey black tank top and low-rise jeans look is so simple, it's dull. Aside from the fact the waistband of the jeans is cut off, a small but interesting detail, Jenner's lack of accessories makes this outfit appear even more basic. Some may say it's cool to not care, but when compared to other gorgeous and creative looks at Coachella, it's safe to say Jenner's outfit stands out for all the wrong reasons.
