Helen Mirren Isn't 'Aging Gracefully' (& She's Not Afraid To Admit It)

In July 2025, icon and BAFTA award-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren turned 80 years old! With this birthday milestone, the actress has reflected on getting older and has a lot to say about it. Sharing her thoughts in a 2025 interview with OK! Magazine (via The Irish Times), Mirren was unforgiving of her on the subject of aging.

For starters, she's had it with the "You look so good for your age" comments. Mirren labels the compliment as patronizing, going even further to consider the remark to be an insult. This isn't the only comment that she took aim at; Mirren goes on to discourage any observations that she's aging "gracefully."

The actress is quoted, "I am not aging gracefully at all!" Where many of Mirren's counterparts would be thrilled to hear that they are aging gracefully, Mirren puts down the comment. Her distaste for the language surrounding getting older is surprising, but her clarification on aging is downright daring. "I am aging with fun, with commitment, but not gracefully. Who cares about graceful?" she said. Now Mirren's not the first celebrity to get real about aging, but she has long been an advocate for getting older.

Helen Mirren's decades-long stance on getting older

Helen Mirren has had the opportunity to share her perspective on aging for over a decade now. Even ten years ago, Mirren was receiving comments about her age and her outlook on getting older. And, through the years, has maintained a consistent brutal honesty on the topic. In an interview with "Vogue" in 2015 for the celebration of her 70th birthday, Mirren echoes the same palpable remarks: "At every age, you lose some things but you gain other things. That's the kind of magic that happens, so deal with it. You either die young, or you get old."

A complete look at Mirren through the years proves that this biting tone is a trait that Mirren has had since the beginning of her career. With age, Mirren has only sharpened her tongue — and wished she had done so earlier! In a conversation with "Allure" back in 2017, Mirren shared her one piece of advice for her younger self: to say "F*** off" more, and to stop being so "bloody polite". Her advice on aging reflects her sentiment of aging with fun, and stands as a less terrifying depiction of what it means to grow older.

Helen Mirren's advice on aging

We all worry about what happens to our bodies as we age. The concern is universal. But where aging is pitched as terrifying act, Helen Mirren encourages acceptance. "It's not always easy, but it is inevitable. You have to learn to accept it," she told OK! Magazine (via The Irish Times). The finality of her quote brings a sense of courage to the acceptance of aging, in which coming to terms with age is a brave act that we must bring ourselves to. "We just do grow older, there's no way you can escape that. You have to grow up with your own body, your own face and the way it changes," she added.

Mirren's perspective on age offers a sweet note of connection between body and perception. She echoes the sentiment that even as adults, we are still growing up. Learning to age is learning to accept who you are, especially in the physical. Mirren hasn't been without advice herself; in fact, her outlook on age and approach to tips for the younger generation are something of a familial trait to her. In her talks with "Vogue", Mirren shares advice she has lived by from a mature woman in her life. When she was only in her 30s, Mirren's mother passed down these wise words to her daughter: "Never be worried about getting older because an amazing thing happens. When you're 20, you hope turning 40 never happens. And then when you turn 40, you realize it's great and you don't want to be 20 again."
