Everything We Know About The New Baby-Sitters Club Netflix Series

The Baby-Sitters Club is being introduced to a new generation. Netflix recently released a sneak peek of the new series, set to debut in July, showing the girls of the titular club gathered around a landline phone. We also see smart phones in the room, though, so we know that, in spite of the phone — a corded one, no less — this new incarnation of the beloved book series turned TV show most definitely takes place in the modern era.

The book series, written by Ann M. Martin, was previously adapted into an HBO show in 1990 as well as a 1995 film. Martin serves as a producer on the Netflix show. "I'm amazed that there are so many passionate fans of The Baby-Sitters Club after all these years, and I'm honored to continue to hear from readers—now grown, who have become writers, editors, teachers, librarians, filmmakers—who say that they see a reflection of themselves in the characters of Kristy and her friends," said Martin in a statement (via NBC). "So I'm very excited about the forthcoming series on Netflix, which I hope will inspire a new generation of readers and leaders everywhere."

The new Baby-Sitters Club will "reflect modern-day issues"

Per E! News, the series stars Sophie Grace as Kristy Thomas, Malia Baker as Mary Anne Spier, Momona Tamada as Claudia Kishi, Shay Rudolph as Stacey McGill, and Xochitl Gomez as Dawn Schafer. Clueless star Alicia Silverstone is also attached to the series, playing Kristy's mother, Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer.

The 10 episode series promises to take everything fans love about The Baby-Sitters Club and bring it into the 21st century. "The themes of The Baby-Sitters Club still resonate 30 years after the original book series was released and there has never been a more opportune time to tell an aspirational story about empowering young female entrepreneurs," said Melissa Cobb, vice president of Kids & Family at Netflix. "Together with Ann M. Martin and the team at Walden Media, our ambition is to contemporize the storylines and adventures of this iconic group of girlfriends to reflect modern-day issues."

The Baby-Sitters Club premieres on July 3.
